Premier League or Championship

Surely the problem here is that we are existing in a bit of a bubble, alluded to in other articles infinite.
Our results this season are skewed by the fact we've come down with some of the premier league players (Summerville, Rutter, James, Bamford, Gnonto, etc) and the squad has been bolstered by parachute payments that has allowed us to bring in the likes of Piroe, Ampadu, Gruev, etc.
Fast forward a couple of seasons when the likes of Cree, Archie and Meslier have been cherry picked and the parachute payments have run dry and we are trying to compete against newly relegated teams who can afford to keep hold of some of their big names and haven't had Orta and Radz and the kind of contracts we had to deal with.
Ask this question to your average Baggies fan or Norwich fan who were Leeds fans in a different skin a few years ago and you know what their response would be. PL every time.

This is an excellent reply

Remember the pre Bielsa days ????

I do, and they were horrible, really horrible.

Its called selective memory

We had everything we needed to succeed in the premier league after a cracking first season back, could understand being a Huddersfield or Barnsley etc, but had everything we needed to stay up and compete for 6th/7th Euro place after a very respectable 9th. Very, very poor management led us back here in the world’s most difficult league.

To add to the already excellent replies:

Sport is nothing without jeopardy. The highs are only so sweet precisely because of the lows.

Do I want to just win games in the Championship? Absolutely not. I want the thrill of competing against the richest teams in the country, despite the possibility of falling flat on our face.

It's the failing that means when we get up again and succeed, I have a even bigger smile on my face.

Great post.

Dennis and Wetherby have hit nails on the head.

Fans' perceptions of our time in the PL have been horribly distorted by the poor management and failure to invest well of Radrizzani and co. We could have followed Brighton or Brentford, for example - they have made the transition from champ to PL very well.

This time round we have much stronger and more professional leadership, it seems. I'm still anticipating going back up automatically this season, especially now Willy Gnonto's found his scoring boots again!

Villa and Brighton are in Europe, they are doing what we should be doing. PL by far (minus VAR though)

PL every time.

My feeling on this.

With the new ownership, we might see a different
outcome if we do go back up. They have the money
to at least have us mid-table for those crucial first
three seasons. Let's get back up this season and
deal with whatever comes next when it happens.

Excellent article and very thought provoking comments.

Really enjoying this season so far but for absolute joy it is moments like the Stuart Dallas winner at the Etihad with 10 men.
That's why the Premier league is the place we need to be.

Shaun, I know you love the lad. Lazio want to sign
Morgan Whittaker. Plymouth turned them down.

Moscow white for me is useless on the show. I have no idea how he gets on it.

Anybody who wants championship football every season for me may as well change their hobby and do something else. Hope has been driven down in football but you cannot eradicate it completely. A diehard obsessed football fan will always have a flicker of hope his side can move upwards. The bigger the club the bigger the flicker. We are fooking Leeds United. I want this club not only back in the top flight but challenging for trophies. The only way we can win a major trophy is by being in the premier league.

We got our recruitment horribly wrong. We signed too many foreign gambles who had no prem experience. Look how well Ross Barkley is doing atm, we were linked and ridiculing him back in the prem, yet we went for Aaronson and Roca. Gibbs White, Neco Williams are other players we were linked to but didn't get. Recruitment is key in the Premier league and Brentford, Villa, Brighton and co seem to get it right.

We need more players like Ampadu and Rodon if and when we do get promoted.

Yeah I knew they were linked but didn't realise they rejected a bid. He's the ilk of CF id like us to go for next season.

Yes Shaun, id be going for that type of striker too

Excellent player. If we go up, and adding the fact
that Rudy Cline-Thomas has the Plymouth connection.
You can bet he's already looking at him if we do go up.

Some excellent responses - Premier League every time as I would expect. Let’s just hope that if we get up this season we are better prepared and can sustain a strong and successful return.

If VAR was scrapped in the EPL and they only used goal line tech then I think I would be more excited about the prospect of top level football next season but for me the Championship is more enjoyable by far.

However from a fan perspective, even acknowledging all that, I still want us out of this league this season to renew old rivalries and be financially secure.

I will put up with the inevitable increase in disappointing results in the EPL full of hope that we can still survive and begin our rise however long it takes.

The bottom line is despite the irritating VAR,you just can't help yourself wanting to be back at the top table as I'm sure even Sheffield United fans will be wishing for next season in the EFL after a miserable virtually joyless season back in the Premier league.

The quality of football is so much better in the Premier League. When you think of the best games you have seen in the last ten years, how many will come close to City away, or Liverpool away or the magnificent Wolves away with Ayling scoring the winner?
It’s called the Premier League for a reason. You can’t blame that league because we had a poor team. It is the home of the best football in the world and we have to be a part of it.

Of course it's more enjoyable in the Championship - cos we're winning more matches than we lose, for a change. But as has been said, those memories of the Prem high points, such as Stuey scoring the winner vs Man City, are way above anything we'll experience in the Champ. We're a big fish in a small pond but we don't belong here. Going back up may be our hardest test – which is why I'm disappointed with our poor transfer window. I fear those up there in the boardroom are taking our promotion for granted.

If Rodon or Ampadu get injured, we are in trouble. And why we didn't get a CAM is beyond me. However, the squad looks balanced and versatile enough to manage a couple of injuries. Hurry back, Pascal and DJ!

I agree it’s great to be up there and winning games but the ultimate prize has to be the PL. We want to test our club against the best teams and we are, after all, Leeds United.

There’s no reason why, with some decent owners, we couldn’t get into the top six or eight of the PL.

We should easily be competing with the likes of Wolves, Brighton, Brentford, West Ham and Villa,

You'd be suprised how often that comes up on talkshows. Norwich and Burnley fans seem to say it a lot, I hear Norwich fans say it a lot, that they'd rather win the championship and then stay down.

Every year that we're in the championship i want us to finish first. It's a great trophy and i'm so glad we didn't go up with Bielsa in second or the playoffs.
For me the championship is crap because we cant keep our best players for too long if we're not in the prem.

posted on 6/2/24

Couldn't give 2 sheets whether we finish 1st or 2nd. Its a fizzy pop trophy on Norwich and West Brom seem to keep count of. Villa, Brighton and Brentford didn't win the Champ, and they're having a cracking time.

Premier League, no doubts for me. Highly unlikely we progress into Europe from the Championship (ok, unless we win a cup) but our short-term ambition (next 3 years) should be to be a top 6/7 club in the Prem, qualify for a European competition and make a domestic cup semi-final.
