Connor Roberts - a Burnley fan's view

He has been sidelined this season only because Company has been given a huge transfer budget and is dismantling the Championship winning team, player by player

——————————————

Thought Da Silva who has been infront of him this season, was already at the club and the right back they have signed to replace him has second choice is on loan 🤷🏻‍♂️

Its not good having so many Welsh players in the team, it means when Wales have a game or 3 if they're picked we lose nearly half our team just to them!..

Is there a limit on how many players a National team can take at one time or do they get all they want?..

He was first choice pretty much up until getting sent off in October, since then Da Silva has been first choice.

Not saying that wouldn't have happened anyway but if their boss was undecided it might have tipped the scales.

Interestingly at the weekend Burnley played Assignon at Right Back and Da Silva at Left Back, which makes me think that Assignon was brought in as first choice not second choice. Da Silva it appears can play down either flank despite being right footed.
Wonder what that means future wise for Charie?

Germany, I'm not convinced by your view that having too many Welsh players isn't good. If we accept it's a good thing to have internationals in the side, surely it doesn't matter which international side they play for as the international breaks tend to involve all teams anyway. Or maybe I'm missing something - it wouldn't be the first time!

Could have just kept Ayling if the best we could do is Roberts. Barely an upgrade imo. Frees up Gray to be spare in midfield which is a bonus as we didn't bother to sure up there.

I think this is the one of the most ridiculous takes I've ever heard. Thinking that he's not an upgrade on Ayling is deluded at best.

I loved Ayling as much as the next Leeds fan but it was quite clear he could no longer offer what he could in the past.

Let me introduce you to a concept that's been around for a little while.

It's called the International Break.

PS we don't play during the International Breaks.

hmm, great player for us Ayling, but thats not let think blinker the truth, was past his best and for a cliub looking forward I'm pretty sure moving Ayling on was the right thing to do. Roberts isn't too bad of a replacement... but hardly an amazing signing at the same time

Talking about 'too many Welsh players in our team', in the 70s the whole Leeds team were practically Scots !!, plus you had Clarke and Hunter and big Jack as England players ! Giles for Eire...

Ayling ball watches and is a liability at the back, but he still offers plenty in an attacking sense and given that we dominate most games, he'd have contributed plenty in attack. Roberts is an upgrade, but as a 28 year old Burnley sub, not a massive one.

Burnley fan I work with said Kompany got really annoyed with him and wanted him out because he took his two weeks paternity leave.

Apparently he told him footballers don't do that and he said, tough I'm taking it.

Agree with many of your takes Shaun over the years where others have not but not on this one. Let's see how he does before making that assessment before he has kicked a ball for us.

Ayling is interesting isn't he? not good enough to start for us this season ahead of a 17 year old lad and most weeks doesn't even make the match-day squad yet he walks into the Middlesbrough side. Looking at the local press from yesterday, he did a good enough job containing Sunderland's MOTM for most of the game, Jack Clarke, who, most of us, would welcome back in a flash, the same Jack Clarke who gave Archie a torrid old time back in December. It's a funny old game.
What Shaun is missing of course is that whilst Bill can still cut it at Championship level, clearly, it is in a different type of team, he recognised that his chances to play would be few and far between.
When you say we could have just kept him, do you mean forced him to stay, against his will, even though he wasn't going to get any game time. That's just cruel.

As I said didn't watch it, and I don't know who these guys are but Craig Johns said: Luke Ayling - 6

"Was always going to be a tricky afternoon against Clarke. The Sunderland wide man came to life late on, but beyond that there was only really one major chance for him as Ayling did the task well enough. Some good balls up the channel for Forss too".

and Dominic Shaw said "Did a good job on Clarke until Sunderland’s star man came to life late on. Leeds loanee was on a yellow by that stage and had to be careful".

Maybe the reason Ayling went straight into the team is they are used to much, much worse.

Incidentally Howson got a 5 from both Johns and Shaw, looks like he had a shocker.

Ditto ... I think Ayling is awesome but fell back (literally at times) on his falling over to get a freekick. I watched the game, mainly because of the ex Leeds contingent in both sides (Hjelde, Greenwood, Howson, Luke - sure i've missed someone out?). Watched Luke especially and thought he was better going forward.

I'm glad he's gone out on loan to get game time. Nothing but respect and best wishes for him.
