But the putting these players on 7/8/9 year wage contracts will create players who are not going anywhere, down the line.

The current morale issue being reported and how this pans out imo will set the tone going forward.

The thing is that i dont think you have the quality in teh squad to overcome the form/morale issue, it still needs some very sound investment to make it balanced. Then a manager like Poch, or better, has a chance to turn things around. Currently, i dont think any manager could do so.

For me, the sensible approach would be to sell James, sell Gallagher, bring in £150m or so. Take a big hit on some players like Lukaku, to clear some of the longer term costs, and invest in cheap potential and the odd 'old head' and start from scratch to rebuild.

Difficulty with this is, will all the current talent be onboard with a backwards step? It's not what they signed up for in the beginning. Do they then just stagnate.

You are right, its how these issues have been locked in long term by the length of sizable contract that makes backing out of this problem almost impossible.

I done the Amortization figure based on 5 yr divide, it actually comes up about 200m across 29 players.

6 players are either homegrown products or out of contract/ fees paid.

Chelsea’s best chance of getting out of this is to keep producing players through their academy and pumping them out to the continent for £10m a go - pure profit.

Under Roman Chelsea had one of if not the very best youth system

It must be the biggest in the league by some distance, maybe Utd match it.

You total lack of Europe, which will probably continue into next season as well, is really going to be driving your ability to invest / need to sell. There's £25m- £100m in prize money you miss out on (which youve had in the past), not to mention extra matchday & sponsorship etc Ouch!

I understand why that would be preferable overall but how does it make more of a difference to the books than selling off someone we've already bought? Those fees are over our heads anyway, so while it eliminates the possibility of it ever being worthwhile these are desperate times & it still does it's immediate job - counts as one lump sum (cos FFP's dodgy) and we've got some room to breathe for a bit.

Selling academy players shows as an immediate 100% profit as there were no buying costs obviously.

Selling players previously bought can straddle tax years I believe as you don’t just buy these players with one lump sum, it’s usually spread.

I’m not an accountant or expert, that’s how I understand it though.

Big reason we (Spurs) could spend again this January without any worries is because we banked £100m pure profit on Kane and a further £10m on Winks. Factor In also that Kane was on £350k a week and you can see why we had loads of FFP headroom

If we sold Mudryk for example, while that fee we paid is still on the bill for the next 8-9 years (however long his contract was), the selling fee still gets logged immediately and loosens the noose for a bit?

Imo, it is about hollowing out the Clubs cash assets

Using them / pure profit to put cash money into the club in the short term.

Then loading the club with debt with the player purchases, placing that debt into the amortization column which is hitting the clubs books over the amortization period.

This becomes an issue, as the clubs economy shrinks due its inability to enter elite competition and then not receive the associated revenue streams 25/ 100m depending on the competition. Also a mid table club will attract one level of sponsorship revenue and an elite C/L club another.

When Boehly - Clearlake bought CFC they bought an elite C/L club with the associated incomes and prospects going forward. Thats why they paid 2.5 bln and made a commitment to invest a further ( load the club with debt) 1.750bln.

If CFc had been a mid table club with such associated revenue they more than likely would not have bought the club and they certainly would not have paid 2.5 bln.

Imo when they lost C/L status and the associated revenues this is when they lost control of the situation.

Now they are faced with weakening the squad by selling pure profit assets,whilst buying inferior players on the strap.

Yeah, if the player is not worth the price paid, and he is taking up a place on the wage bill.

In a normal situation you would sell, but some of the figures involved are so significant that the loss would be so great it would take the club over the FFP compliance threshold.

Basically there may not be enough money in the clubs annual turnover to cover taking such losses.

This means the club risk being stuck with stagnant players who are demoralised and out of favour and form.

It doesn’t hinder it, it’s just way more profitable to sell home grown players.

FFP takes player contracts into account - so if you sign a player for £100m on a 5 year contract then after 1 year the asset (player) value drops to £80m, and assuming you have spread the purchase then the liability owed is also £80m. So if you sell at that point for say £90m then it will show as a £10m profit even though technically you lost £10m on it.

Because you never bought an academy product, they do not depreciate and are always valued with a cost of £0 - hence when you sell its pure profit.

So considering the 2, if you buy a player for £50m for a 5 year contract, spread payments, then sell him for £75m 2 years later then the profit is going to show as £35m at that point for FFP purposes. Contrast you sell an academy product for £40m - that’s more profit for nearly half the price, allowing you more FFP headroom

And that is not taking into consideration the effect of the players long contract wages and how this will affect any potential sale price.
