Southgate has done an excellent job as England manager, and I'm baffled by the number of people who think England would have done better with a more progressive manager in charge. However, I don't think his qualities as a tournament manager of a team that doesn't get much training time together translate to being an elite club manager. I'd be surprised if a well run United or another big club went for him. And I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't go back into club football after England.

Most probably more whining. Calling you a yank can't that should stick to baseball and telling everyone he's United's bestest fan.

Ashworth and Southgate are meant to be really good mates. Southgate likely to step down this summer from England duties too.

I don’t think he’ll get a big job, but I don’t know what he’ll be like as a club manager now because we’ve not much to go off - he managed Boro ages ago so it doesn’t tell us how well equipped he is today.
Personally I hope he goes back to the FA and can take an important role there. Wouldn’t surprise be if he ended up Chief Executive of the FA one day if he did.
I'm not saying I'd want Southgate but, to be fair to him, he has been pretty par for England since he's been in the job. A semi-final, final and last eight finish. Average of top four. If we had a par manager at United, under a good system above, then we'd be much better than we've been this last decade!
Dazza, yeah, I'm not saying he can't do well as a club manager, just that we don't have evidence for or against, because his track record is based on doing a job with very different requirements. As far as I can see, the thing he really excels at is presiding over a very strong culture, which would indeed be an asset in football administration - whereas it's only one of a few qualities you need as head coach of a big club.
By the way, it's also quite hard to imagine him being back in the tribal world of club football when he has kind of become a figure who transcends all of that, and seems to thrive in that role.

I guess it depends if he still wants to test his management at a high level. As you say, he’s been working in a job that has different requirements, he’s only ever managed Boro at club level and may feel he has unfinished business at club level. It would be interesting to see what he is capable of producing under those conditions.
Impossible to see inside his mind, and it's quite possible he enjoys working with players, feels he has more to prove as a coach, etc. But (maybe I'm just projecting) I can't help feeling his legacy is on much safer ground if he stays within that national football sphere.
This instead of that Mitchell dude or is that for another role?

Last I heard they were rumoured to be going for them both in slightly different roles. Mitchell as a head of recruitment type figure.
Could be paper nonsense though.
Yeah I guess it depends how much he cares about legacy as well. There’s also the financial side to consider. If he does well he could earn a lot of money.
This instead of that Mitchell dude or is that for another role?
-------------------------------------------
I'm not sure I see that happening as I think Paul Mitchell has his eye on another Sporting Director role as opposed to just overseeing recruitment.
He's apparently in the frame to take over from Tiago Pinto at Roma.
That said, he may feel like United is too good an opportunity to turn down for various reasons. I would imagine our search for a head of recruitment will accelerate pretty quickly after we confirm our DoF.
Does anybody know where Brailsford fits into the new structure ?

Gardening leave is such nonsense. He's 100% going to be contacted and have a say on things whilst he's meant to be doing nothing strictly speaking. It's very hard to prove after someone leaves and it's often not worth the hassle and time either.
So it's Arsenal's former head Physio, City's COO and now Newcastle DOF. Not a bad start. If the parasites would have done something like this 11 years ago things might have turned out better for us and them. They may have got their 6bn valuation.
