Other than the league phase, the other big change appears to be that, other than in the qualifiers I presume, there will be no more "dropouts"....so if a team qualifies for the Champions League proper, that's the only competition they will play in that season

I read the home and away will be random.

Gives it a style makeover for the 21st century......8 games against 8 different teams is certainly better than the current stale format

Surely you will play 1 team from each pot home and away

But thats a shame for whoever Rangers get? That’ll be 8 managers on the brink of the sack in the midst of an injury crisis and player revolt 😳

This is the only use of the "Swiss Model" I can find in football.

See il not sure about how good that will be

Take pot 1 this season, had teams like Barca, Man City and Bayern in there aswell as Benfica, Sevilla and Feyenoord

At least in the groups, if you drew Man City, you would play them both at home and at the Etihad

With this setup you could draw Man City and not get a trip to the Etihad, and draw Feyenoord as your away match from that pot...or vice versa

The draw itself will have far more of an impact on a teams progression than before in my opinion

"Surely you will play 1 team from each pot home and away"

Nope......you play 8 teams rather than 4 teams home and away.... 4 home games and 4 away games....Nobody knows what determines 'home' or 'away' yet .....the so called "Swiss model"

Yeah....but for the draw, they break the 36 teams up into four pots, and you play 2 teams from each pot, one home and one away

It's how they decide which one is home and which one is away that I'm interested on

posted on 12/3/24

Surely it will just be drawn into pre-ordained slots with home and away games decided by what slot you are drawn into.

Yep...... it's a mystery

Whichever team wins the league this season.....serious moolah to be made with direct entry

After the league stage, only 12 of the 36 teams are out. Going to be a lot of dead runner, pointless games. A long drawn out league that mostly just decides positions for the next round.

Really wish they’d just leave these tournaments alone

Just another step toward a european league. Shocked.

Hope it happens so we can feck off the bullshat 6.

Well positions 1-8 do not have to play the first knock out round.

The big thing is, it’s gives the mid ranking but non Euro elite sides a minimum of 10 games in Europe - 8 in the league and 2 in the playoff, win the playoff and you get 12. Bear in mind in its current format that the finalists play 13 games total. So it’s a load more money for those non elite sides.

Gonna seriously impact the football calendar though

I hope somebody monitors it very closely because if I was a betting man teams from bigger countries will suddenly avoid trips to Quarabag and the like.

Cheers stevie - was clueless about changes but that made it a lot clearer 👍

You could be on to something there....though they will always claim, luck of the draw

The biggest shambles in all this is that two countries (ie Spain and England) will now get five(!) teams in the "champions" league.

posted on 13/3/24

This thing is not being done to help the smaller teams. It`s always to benefit the bigger countries more. Of course the smaller teams get more, but you can bet proportionately, the bigger countries get even more.

Nope

Currently Italy and Germany leading the charge. Based on the teams left it is likely to be England and Italy getting the extra spots.

Additionally there are another 2 spots for non Euro elite nations - so no reason why Scotland cannot benefit as well

It’s to appease everyone.

Barcelona, Juventus - desperate for cash, this helps

Smaller clubs get more exposure, more money and greater chances of qualifying.

Elite leagues get an additional place

It’s arguably a win win. Now we just need the football to be good.

This would make sense until a team from England draws a team from England then they have to do it all again.
