The stats point to a mostly positive season but what they don't take into account is how we had no Europe and went out of the cups early.

If we get top 4 then it's a job well done I guess. But if we don't then I would actually say that Ange has underachieved and it's a bit disappointing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Without Kane, a new system and new faces? I think 6th or below would be underachieving. I thought 5th place would be a realist target at the start of the season.

Fine margins but I would consider 4th as over achieving.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d say fourth/fifth is probably par, considering you’ve no Europe to contend with. That balances out the new manager aspect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not having that at all.

No one expected Spurs to come 4th or 5th in August. no one!

Sold Kane, manager untested at this level, first season, limited transfer dealings (no DoF over the summer), clear shortcomings in the squad.

Some pundits were forecasting bottom half or certainly little better than the 8th we managed last season with Kane's 30 goals.

Most fans were hopeful of may be top 6, but Utd had had a good season, NUFC too. Chelsea were expected to be more competitive. Villa and Brighton following on from strong seasons.

UCL was always a big outside chance.

As the seasons gone on, 3 of those teams have dropped away, Spurs have performed better than most expected, and its only really Villa & Spurs who have stepped. SO yes, 4th or 5th is the expectation now, but never in August.

2nd highest (22) points gained from losing positions, behind Liverpool (26)

Liverpool are on 29 now. wtf, these cants have come from behind on 11 games.

The forecasts of bottom half always felt like over the top and lazy pessimism to me. It's the same people who say struggling teams would get relegated if they take out their best players, which is rarely ever the case.

Even without Kane I thought with a new manager playing a fresh and exciting style of football, the players we bought and the lack of fixtures, that the season would be a decent one. Then the start to the season happened and it was better than we all could have expected. With that start I think it was fair to then expect top 4 as a reasonable target. The fact that we failed to get anywhere really in the cups, which I had seen as a realistic chance of doing something in pre-season, this should only have reinforced the need to finish top 4. Given where we stand now, with our best players all available again, this certainly hasn't changed.

It would be harsh to say Ange will have flopped if we don't get top 4 or CL but it would feel like we've underachieved.

I predicted Spurs to finish 5th, above Arsenal so this is wrong

I don't think anybody looked at the Spurs squad and thought it wasn't, at worst, 7th best. That's before even accounting how utterly awful United are.

Ange has done a great job, has Spurs playing great football. But he didn't take over an awful team. He took over a half decent team and has made them 3 quarters decent. He deserves credit for that

The absence of any cup run is just unfortunate imho

From memory you went out of the league cup on penalties in one of Ange's first games (always a lottery). You had the misfortune to draw City in the FA cup......

I sure there will be greater priority on a cup run next season even with European fixtures.

4th or 5th league position with a UCL place would make for an exciting Summer transfer window. Typical Ange he has already got business done early for the Summer window

We went out playing a weakened team. It's that that partly led to us having to resort to pens, as opposed to winning in the 90 mins.

Drawing City is a bit unfortunate but we were at home where we have a good winning record against them (won our last 4), which subsequently ended in that match.

The need to win something grows and grows with each season we don't.

Well there has been a fair bit of money spent, well over £100m, and it's a pretty good team all things considered, even without Kane. Ange has had no European football to focus on and the cup performances were disappointing. Given that and the start we made, I think top 4 should always have been the target and certainly an achievable one. You look at what ETH did in his first season for a failing United and he got top 4 and a League Cup and he had Europe in the background too.

So yeah I would consider it, despite the injury disruption for a month or so, an underachievement.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Comparing us to United is abit delusional as we are not on their level in terms of finance and wages. They brought the likes of Casemiro and Eriksen to add to Varane. Ange brought up and comers except for Madders.

Not that delusional considering we have spent a lot of money ourselves this season and seemingly have a decent set of players. Both managers came from weaker leagues inheriting teams that had underperformed the season before. ETH got them to 3rd, won a League Cup and to the final of the FA Cup so already we can't better that. Perhaps it's a case of ETH deserving far more credit for his debut season then?

Yes Man United are the bigger club and can spend more and attract bigger players but they were in a bit of a state before ETH came in. I think you're overstating the difference in what both managers have been up against.

We lost to Fulham, who thrashed our best XI a couple weeks ago.

Ange has done better than most expected so realistic targets changed and they did so fairly quickly. That’s why I said finishing 4/5th is about right, and most seem to think the same. But if you want to paint Spurs as the plucky underdog, crack on.

I agree with you. My point is that we have exceeded expectations and done very well to be half a dozen points off City at this stage. Amazing really, especially when you think of some of the points dropped when the squad was missing so may players for a while

We have added well to the squad in Jan so Should now be expecting 4th or 5th.
