Jack Grealish: When The Media Love You

He was a lot better at Villa tbf. He was allowed freedom to go wandering and make an impact. Scored big goals for them.

At City he's neat and tidy, wins a lot of fouls but he doesn't impact games nearly enough. Part of it is because he's not the stand out player and he needs to play in their structure because he's not afforded the freedom Villa allowed him.

Expect to see him rock back up at Villa when his contract ends.

Still given what he's won at City playing as often as he had he's nowhere near the expensive flops like Pogba, Antony, Pepe, Shevchenko, Enzo, Caicedo, Anyone Chelsea have signed for big money in recent years.

Probably consider him as underwhelming rather than a flop and in with the likes of Keita, Richarlison etc

Don’t disagree with any of that but how many goals are City supposed to score?

I don’t think you get passengers in teams like City tbh. If you’re in it regularly for a manager like Pep then you’re good at football.

I'm amazed you lot can't see what he offers. He had a good game last night. He attracts players to him. Next time you watch City, just take a look at how room other players end up getting, which obviously doesn't get him headlines. He's a top player for me. Try asking Halaand who he'd prefer to play with, Grealish or Doku and I think he'd say Grealish every single time. He does cross the ball but not when the option isn't on.

The problem with measuring a player by G&A is that you're not looking at what else he brings. Ask any Spurs fan who would be in their all time Prem midfield and you can bet your life they'd all put Mousa Dembele in there. His goals and assists were low but he brought so much more. Ball carriers are worth their weight in gold. Grealish is no different.

I'll be bloody annoyed if he's not on that plane in the summer.

I think most people can see what he offers but for 100m you expect numbers on the board as well as creating space for others, winning fouls and being neat and tidy.

Good player that was overpaid for and in that City team he's not at the level to be considered a guaranteed starter. Which I think everyone has the right to expect from a 100m player.

Grealish would have the exact same quality if he was signed on a free. Never really got that stance in this kind of conversation.

Grealish is a very good player. You can list the things he isn't amazing at, but what he is good at;
- He commits defenders creating space elsewhere
- He wins lots of freekicks
- He can create or score a goal from nothing
- Technically he is strong, rarely a bad touch.
- His work rate is great, in fact he's a very good professional when he isn't celebrating trebles
- I'd imagine he's great to have in the dressing room

Just because what we'd like to see from a player like Grealish doesn't match what Pep Guardiola expects from him, doesn't make him a bad player. In spite of his maverick appearance, he follows instruction well.

He'd walk into our left hand side and almost certainly be our best attacking player.

If you can't see why Pep likes Grealish you know feck all about football. CIty rely on an agressive high press. It can all come unglued if you don't hold the ball. No one, but no one, holds the ball better than Grealish. He makes a real difference.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree with this! Clearly being asked/coached a certain way to fit in the system and he very rarely loses the ball, which is key to way Pep wants them to play. Let's also not forget he was very good last season, starting the majority of games in a team that won the treble.

It is a shame in some ways as he was a much more exciting, risk-taking player at Villa and, as others have mentioned, I think individually would have looked a lot better if he signed for Utd. That being said he's gone to City and won it all so I'm sure he's not complaining.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Think you hit the nail on the head here.

Grealish has so much more to his game than holding possession but risk has been coached out of his game which makes you question why a dribbler with an eye for a killer ball and a goal in him has been pushed out wide to play the percentage game and actually have little output in terms of goals and assists.

I think why people find he gets an easy ride is because he has so much more to his game, doesn't/isn't allowed to show it, doesnt influence games massively, and his stats aint great. Cost £100m

He just comes across as a cog in the machine. Mahrez had to adapt to the Pep way but he seemed to maintain that high level of threat and decent output, at a fraction of the cost.

I think Grealish is just in there as he would go off the rails if he wasn't playing football. It is not so much that he is integral to the team, it is more that he will spiral on drink and drugs and then kill himself, if he doesn't get to run into a defender every couple of weeks.

See this is where you will always lose an argument with me Boris, because i'm not biased to United players.

Ronaldo would constantly dive for us, so would Ashley Young.

I don't let the fact they wore United badges influence my opinion.

You should try the same logic with Grealish.

Grealish is a decent player who is very good at keeping the ball. I think his personality however will always mean that his ceiling is going to be lower than what it should be.

It was so funny seeing Pep have a meltdown on the pitch vs Arsenal, when he started going for Grealish. You can see even Pep has lost hope in him now. To go after him and humiliate him publicly with the cameras on like that says it all.

Ironically I think the £100 million signing of Grealish is what really forced the EPL to take action against City's doping.

Wrong yet again. All dives.

If you seriously think the way Grealish dives when he's touched by any opponent is actually a foul, then please stop watching footie.

Ultimately, the most important thing is whether Pep rates him, and obviously he does. If anything, we have seen that if Pep doesn't want you. he won't play you and will ultimately let you go, regardless of price.

So you must be a better judge than Pep. Or maybe he's not quite as awful as you make out

Pep doesn't rate him though. Barely plays him, then the other day vs Arsenal he went for him when the cameras were on.
