The only moment I thought we were going to score came off the back of some stoic work from Rutter, but I agree that he's not in great form at the moment.
I noticed in that game he's started going to ground again and expecting the ref to whistle. By then the opposition are off towards our goal.
It's unfair to lay the dip in performance in only the one direction though. Not enough use of Dan James' pace. The squad seem to have gone down the old path of "try to get it to Bamford" way too much and not enough players (today) trying to take charge and get themselves a shooting opportunity.
I thought Cry was good, but lacking end product. Bamford was isolated (but we kept trying to get the ball to him anyway). Piroe lacks confidence with his striking. Crosses kept going to our opponents too.
We didn't have an awful lot of luck with all the ricochets and saves bouncing straight to Coventry feet, but we normally make our own luck.
I hope we've not become too Bamford-centric again as that never works out well...
In truth, this result was probably overdue, but as usual, it took another stonewall penalty denied, a Bamford miss (how many times have we said that?) and a loss of nerve by Piroe in the last minute to give Coventry the win.
Farke has done brilliantly to get us back into the battle for the autos and although Ipswich are a point ahead of us, they have a much tougher run-in, including an away match at Coventry.
After previous defeats, we have come back with important wins and we should expect more of the same in our next matches. However, he has to make changes, starting with Bamford.
We are almost back to full strength, we just need to reset. Our next game two games will tell us a lot about the mentality of this team.
Love Farke.
He did say judge us after game 40. Fair enough.
After game 41, we look toast. If we manage to battle
our way to second, I'll be massively impressed. Squad
looks shot. Right now, think we need EFL to deduct
Leicester the points their cheating deserves. It'll save
our blushes. Looks like we hit our peak pre international break.

Good point. The way we go sideways, back, forwards, sideways repeat you would think we were sitting on a 3-0 lead. Faced with a determined defence and a team prepared to get in our faces we quickly run out of ideas and our "get it to Summerville and hope he can score another worldie" tactic falls flat.

I saw that as well but as there were no replays, no appeals (other than Firpo's) and the Glynn and Tony missed I assumed it was just wishful thinking. Clear handball.
I wasn’t able to watch the game but from the highlights we had the chances to draw or win, I don’t think it’s tactics or mentality to blame. Frustrating to lose at this point but also, did anyone really expect to go unbeaten till end of the season?
Bigger picture is 13 wins and only 1 loss in 16 games, now is the time to trust the players and system. We’ve got two home games this week to put it right.
We need 1 more point than Ipswich or 3 more points than Leicester over the next 5 games.
All 3 will drop points. If we get 9 points out of the next 12, then I think we go into last game of the season with our destiny in our hands.

Tell you something else, Bestfans, I bet Southampton would rather play Ipswich than ourselves in the play-offs, so when it comes to the last game at home, I think it could be a lot easier than we think. As far as I can see, the Coventry game was the hardest one left for us. On the ther hand, Ipswich have the fixture list from hell - Hull, Boro, Watford and Coventry. Their last game against Huddersfield at home could be tricky if the doggies need a point to stay up at that stage.
It was one loss. Not the end of the world. We pick up and move on. Some of the over reaction is laughable.
Only managed to see the extended highlights but have also read and watched extensive reports.
Have related several times in recent weeks two common threads one being Rutter taking on multiple defenders instead of finding the simple pass and two my frustration with Bamford. Now this is a real conundrum as it is obvious that both have been major pieces in a team that has only lost once since thecstart of the year.
As far as I could tell there was a distinct lack of controlled aggression from Bamford in attacking areas and the misses including Piroe's were head in hands stuff, (Not for the first time).
There is no doubt the International break has had an effect but our 'strong' squad should be able to deal with it.
Coventry appeared quicker and sharper and yes they're having a super cup run, but this is Coventry we're talking about not Barcelona. If they are that great they would be in Leicesters position.
Think it's come to the point where Joseph and Anthony need more minutes.
First goal came from a corner, which had come directly from our own corner π€¦
Second goal directly from our own set peice π€¦

Dont think Rutter has been the same since the injury. Hope we haven't rushed him back.
Coventry barely created anything all game. Not sure how they appeared quicker and sharper?
Their second goal was executed superbly and at speed.
Key moments in the game
Gray early chance - took one touch too many
Coventry goal -
Gray could have been stronger and put the corner out for another corner. Was he cooper-claiming offside? Meslier should never have come for the ball. If he doesnt then he is able to collect the lopped cross back into the box. Rodon fails to win the looped cross header.
Bamford for second game in succession uses his left foot when he should have used his right, failing to make contact with Firpo's low cross.
Coventry 2nd goal. Summerville should be stronger on the initial clearance. Either win the ball or foul the man. Rodons let his man drift off him but its a brilliant ball in and very good finish. Credit a good counter attacking move. Best way of preventing these things is to foul early.
The "handball". Its not stonewall which is term used lazily. There is no var. Only one Leeds player appeals for it, so on this basis how can we expect a referee to see what many others didnt? The players hands were not in the air and it looks to hit his arm which is in a pretty natural position to his body. If that was given against us we would be fuming.
Piroe chance. Should be hitting that left footed across the goal. Plenty of players in the box would be waiting for any keeper seconds.
Leeds 70% posession
Leeds 19-11 shots
Leeds 8-5 shots on target
Leeds corners 9-2
Leeds xg 2.03-1.88
Accurate passes 573-210
I think its fair to say that the performance yesterday warranted 1 point. Coventry have scored a scrappy set-piece goal and a very good counter attacking goal. Beyond that Meslier has made two token near post saves only. Coventry were one of the better teams to visit Elland Road this season. We were not clinical enough with our chances and our crossing was particularly poor.
Rutter criticism - I would think Farke gives Rutter license to hold the ball, run with the ball, try and beat players. This style of play would have been halted long ago should Farke not be sending him out there to damage opponents in this way. Its the sort of football from Rutter than has seen him gain 17 assists. Carry on i say.
Criticism of Bamford - 7 goals in 9 starts. The run of 15 games undefeated commenced with his inclusion in the starting line-up. 3 games without a goal and it starts again. I have to agree that his general performance has dropped a little this past few games and the two big chances he has missed are frustrating.
The call for Joesph - no doubt about it he has impressed from the bench. However, one must consider that in these cameo performances we have had all the ball, we have had 5-6 attackers on the pitch with loads of players around him. Players to make easier passes to. Players to take the attention of defenders in the box. Remember Bamford plays isolated for the majority of the game. Wingers to stay out wide, and a 10 who roams wherever he generally wants to. When we cross to Bamford he is usually outnumbered 4-1. When we play it to Bamford around the box he is usually outnumbers 2/3-1. Can Mateo Joseph play this role?
I'll let Farke make the decision. Got to trust the man who has got us this far. We would all have taken this position at the start of the season. 5 cup finals to go. 5 potential dead rubbers if score-lines go our way in the next couple of games.

I'm a big believer in Bamford. I think he has all the tools we need to be a better team but something doesn't seem right the last few games.

Now lets talk about rutter
Constantly either holding on the ball far too long or taking the wrong option on, when the easy is option is so obvious.

“ … we have just lost our way at exactly the wrong time...hearing Farke talk about expected goals is really lame … ”
“Farke has been here and done it before, so I have confidence in him.”

I do have confidence in him, just don't like this expected goals nonsense....I dont always agree with the timings of his substitutions, but I do have confidence in him.
He's done this twice before, gotten the most out of these players this season and handled tough situations,

Indeed. I thought those two points you made summed up our current plight well. DF is far, far from perfect, but I do think he’ll get us over the lineπ

I'm a big believer in Bamford. I think he has all the tools we need to be a better team but something doesn't seem right the last few games.
I agree with rev, maybe at least give Joseph more minutes.
