Hi, Funrob. Welcome back, hope you’re well. We’ve played our part in saving football today.
Robb - told you cant believe this lfc team are top of league. They look so poor
Has he stepped up this season? He’s still generally been poor to average as have all our CBs which is why we’ve conceded more shots than any other team in the top 5 European leagues.
He has his limitations of course but the scapegoating hysteria was a disgrace. I'm glad he has come out the other side of that period and that the overall narrative of his time at United is a bit more balanced now.

Not sure you can really blame the centre backs for that too much.

I feel the lack of a midfield is what’s leading us to concede so many shots. Maguire ain’t great but he definitely gets in the way of so many shots which serves a purpose

He doesn't look like a broken man as he began to last season. I can't think of many individual errors. Conceding goals this season has been as much about team shape / open midfield and inconsistent line-ups in defence due to injuries as it has poor form of defenders.
Maguire is one of only a limited number of players that remotely deserves to be at this club as a regular starter. Fernandes, Hojlund, Garnacho, Shaw and Mount being the others.
Not really interested in the divvy naysayers that cannot recognise the requisite skill set required to do what's necessary at this level. They are way beyond a joke.
Mind you, having only those six + plus some pretty ordinary support from the squad is not great - particularly when the age of two of those identified is considered.
Start with either Dalot and/or lindelof and the team then HAS to score at least twice to achieve a result. Start with both and it's guaranteed that three may be required
Maguire cannot play in a high line, it isn’t his fault but he is too easily beaten by pace on the turn.
Games like today, when you need leadership, aggression and we have men behind the ball, he’s great.

Problem is our MF.
I don't think likes of VVD are that fast but they have players ahead that do a job making them in essence a sweeper.
Sort that MF and our defence and our keeper get better overnight
2023: "We will build a top defence around Martinez and Varane"
2024: "I can offer you Maguire and Kambwala"
Fair play to both of them
Yeah but I’d say the defence also plays a part in our poor defensive record. I’m not saying Maguire is sh-t and never have, he is what he is, an average defender who while not deserving of his criticism didn’t really help matters with how he went about dealing with it either.
He’s be ok at times and shown what qualities he does possess but I wouldn't say he’s ‘stepping up this season’.
I think his transfer fee (which is never the fault of a player) will forever be his legacy at the club and something that he was never able to justify. He’s also got an annoying face which never helps a players like-ability (again not his fault).
The defence does, but Maguire has generally played well, and the centre backs aren’t really to blame for the number of shots we concede.
Kambwala performed as good as him. I would say even better bearing in mind his age and the magnitude of this game.
Dalot too did well against Diaz, who is a tricky customer
Maguire is not a great defender, but he's nowhere near as bad as the frenzied coverage he gets suggests, and he became a scapegoat. Reminds me of how our fans used to blame Xhaka for everything.
How do CBs play no part in shots conceded?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The vast number of shots we concede isn’t really their fault. We are shambolic defensively as a team, it takes two passes and teams are on the edge of our box. The centre backs play a part, but nowhere near as much as the clear tactical issues and the rest of their teammates. They’re the last line of defence before a shot more often than not. Can’t blame them too much for how easy it is for opponents to get into that position, we’d probably concede even more if it weren’t for the amount of blocks they make.
Yeah I agree with that but isn’t the space between defender and midfield a big issue with us and if your defence sit deep (which a player like Maguire does) then they invite more pressure/shots?
That’s part of it, but defending deeper doesn’t just mean you will automatically concede a stupid amount of shots. It’s a perfect storm that’s created an absolute mess, I think it’s a bit unfair to really blame Maguire too much for it.

Then it’s up to ETH to get his forwards and midfield deeper and more compact instead of charging off to close down lost causes and opening up huge distances from front to back. The alternative is for the rest of the backline to push up, but you can’t really do that with Maguire, Evans, Lindelof etc… and we give the ball away too much to play high up the pitch and sustain pressure on opponents & be able to keep a high line with more security.
Casemiro was trying to embarrass our CBs today Im sure about that.
Fair play to Maguire and Big Willy for not punching his lights out on the pitch today.
Casemiro was awful today. Maguire is limited, but I don't doubt his effort or attitude, which a few others could learn from.
It's up to the team as a whole in trying to cut down the number of chances we concede, but a lot of it comes from what is happening in front of the CBs rather than the CBs as well (although we have generally been ropey defensively), but ETH doesn't seem to have addressed this issue all season

Casemiro was the worst player on the pitch today but he wasnt helped by Mainoo either, He went missing for large parts of the game. Liverpool will be kicking themselves tonight. They blew it with the amount of chances they were given. This was their easiest game of their run in too.
Maguire is still not good enough and should at best be 4th choice CB next season.
