A majority of clubs voted in favour of the spending cap, which will be determined by the amount of money earned in television rights by the lowest-earning club in the Premier League.

Wonder how much difference there is between the top and bottom club in this regard? I thought PL clubs distributed TV money pretty evenly anyway.

A wage cap should be included.

The club staff should have to wear caps to show when they've hit their spending limit, could be sweet and also fun :o)

The basic is shared equally,. The only difference would be the fee paid for each game shown.

Surely the smaller clubs will complain they are being held back as the big clubs get more TV appearances.

An independent regulator will be an interesting addition to the game and to discussions like this.

When you look at American sport, the potential for changes to improve competitiveness is huge, but would be resisted by the big clubs for sure.

It will make fans of big clubs fume, but the way football is now is not healthy imo.

How can you have big clubs going into a season knowing almost for sure that they won’t win anything before a ball has been kicked?

It would only work if Europe wide, otherwise players will just go where the money is and the league that limits wages will suffer the loss, while others will exploit it to promote their own league.

Not really. Squad size limits mean the elite players would only have so many options

I think they're probably an exception that proves the rule more than anything.

Back in the day (!), promoted teams would - I think I'm right in saying - quite frequently do well.

It's not impossible for any club to win the league, its just highly improbable that most will and this has always been the case, except for in very rare occasions, like Leicester or Forest.

In my life time as a football fan (more than 40 years) its been Liverpool & Everton, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and now Liverpool.

Leicester and Blackburn are the outliers. One spent a lot the other genuine fluke...but all the other winners are the traditional big clubs...and it has ever been thus!

Melts,

----------------------------------------------------------------------

They spent a lot to make that European cup winning team.

Agree with the sentiment you’re saying though, the underlying issue is football is a much more open market than it used to be (it was at least open but mainly domestically before) and I’m not sure that can be changed now.

I think I could come up with plenty of examples, but clubs would routinely bounce around the division - finishing close to relegation one year and then battle for the title the next.

The league is almost a closed shop now. At least 13 clubs, every season, would be delighted with a top six finish!
