He still have it all to prove and whatever happens managerially, he's going to be number 1 next season. We'll see how he does. As you say, less activity on our goal will mean less errors generally.
What I do want to see us start to do is actually use our 2nd keeper in the cups etc like many other teams do.
Top quality GK who has had a difficult start to his Utd career with some high profile mistakes but has redeemed himself to a large extent. Still has a number quirks to his game / may even been technical issues which, hopefully, can be coached out.
There are aspects I love, in particular his attitude, confidence and general personality. However, those three factors can also veer towards arrogance and over confidence that leads to him taking chances or making questionable decisions, not too dissimilar to Fabian Bartez, for example.
Are we utilising his main skill sets which are playing out from the back? No
He does have errors in him but he's improved over the season. The mess infront of him would be a nightmare for any keeper, not just Onana so you have to have some sympathy in that respect. I think he has the mental toughness that is lacking in most of our squad and for that reason it's important he stays for now.
I do wonder what difference a fit Martinez would have made this season.
Hell do for now. Lots of other areas that need more attention. If he wasnt getting peppered with shots against him every game we wouldnt be talking about him so much.
I wouldn't go as far as top quality. He's definitely not shown anything to be classed as that. However I do feel for him a bit this season. He's been hung out to dry by poor tactics and a terrible injury list.
Give him another year and see how he does seems sensible. Could go either way this one.
Antony on the other hand has had two seasons now and he's just awful. It's time to go.
If anyone will benefits from a settled backline that have a clear way of playing, it will be a keeper.
I'm not saying he's been faultless, obviously not, but what a season to try and settle into a new league.
Of course he gets another season.

He should do.
The only caveat to that is new managers sometimes like to have a keeper they like on board quite quickly.
He's alright. I think we should have got a better keeper for that money, and probably would have if our recruitment operation was run properly. But he's an upgrade on the last guy and nowhere near as bad as some like to make out. As others have said, far from our biggest problem.
In other good news there seems to be a Saudi bid on the table for Casemiro for about 30-35m quid. Given he's two years into the deal and we massively overpaid for him to start with.......I'd snap their hands off.

Exactly this. Alarmed by the number of shots he's faced. Over the summer the rebuild will, or should, focus on rebuilding the spine of the team which includes the defence and CM. Fix this and get a settled and capable defence and the GK will no longer be the the main focus, unless of course he errs, which given the way he plays, is not the beyond the realms of possibility. Sadly he is gaffe prone and it's whether he can limit the gaffes to a few and far between will determine whether he stays long term or goes I guess.

When has a Utd keeper ever had as many shots fired at them as he has? Not in my memory?
Mistakes? Of course but I'll give him next season and hopefully an improved set up in front of him before final judgement

De Gea used to, but he was a great shot stopper and used to save a huge number that kept us in games, otherwise past 6 seasons or so, we would be doing just as bad as we are right now. He was our player of the season a few times too for that reason.
ETH hasn't changed a thing from previous managers, we're still playing the same $hit on a stick football, if not worse, one of the difference...our keeper doesn't make as many saves as before and we have even less control in games.

We won’t get anywhere near the CL or any meaningful title with Onana between the sticks.
He is an awful goalkeeper.

Again that's probably correct too.
ETH really spaffed 400m away didn't he? Jesus Christ. 😂
Every keeper, including the best in the world, makes some mistakes, and the frequency of mistakes almost always correlates with how much pressure they are put under. Neuer - the best of his generation - made a catastrophic error last night that in the context of Real Madrid exerting serious, concerted pressure on Bayern's defence. Alisson made two costly errors in Liverpool's defeat to Arsenal this season - probably not a coincidence that this happened in a game where his team were put under the cosh way more than they are used to. Onana has played behind a team in chaos all season, a team performing at relegation level in terms of shots and chances conceded. Some statistics suggest he has overperformed the league average in terms of preventing goals. But that aside, if you put the same keeper in every team in every match and assume that they make a consistent number of serious mistakes throughout the season, let's say one per 50 shots faced, it's clear that he'll have far more howlers playing for United than many of the other teams, because of the sheer number of shots faced.
Combining the thoughts above with his track record over several years (including in the CL) I think Onana is probably substantially better than he looked this season, and that any flaws in his game that have been magnified this season ought to be far less exposed as we build a team that is able to defend and to build possession even to a league average level.
The goalkeeper we didn’t need, for the money we couldn’t afford to waste.

Well maybe not as much as Onana but still had a fair share.
Getting rid would not be easy, given what he cost you and £100k wages.
You also wouldnt want such a costly 'asset' warming the bench.
Like or loathe, you are stuck with him i reckon.
I don't think we have any choice but to give him another season due to the fact we have so many other positions to fill.
Yes give him another season. All players & managers deserve 2 seasons
