Look who posted it before asking that question
1 of the reasons SAF said he signed Barthez, was to impress on the treble winning squad, that there was always more to be won (Barthez had won the World Cup 98 and Euro 2000)

And it.certainly didnt hurt.
Surely Schmeichel had a greater impact? Wasn't he the pivotal character in your first PL win?

He was a hugely important player, one of the key foundations that built us into a serious team, but he was at United for two seasons before we won the title. Cantona was the catalyst that took us from a credible title challenger to being the team with the swagger to dominate the league.

For sure, another great signing... but would we have gone for him if Denmark didn’t win the Euros in 92?
We were becoming a force at the start of the 90s, but the catalyst in getting us over the line was Cantona.
Cannot stress the importance of that man and the inspiration he was to the squad.
He walked into Old Trafford, saw Robson, Bruce, Hughes, and said.. ‘I am the captain now’. (even though he wasn’t)
Follow my lead.... and the rest is history.

You were only 5 points shy of winning the title before Cantona came in.
59 points in 91
78 points in 92 after Schmeichel came in
84 points in 93 after Cantona came in.
Yes Cantona came in mid season and made a huge impact, which put you over the line.
But Schmeichel was worth about 10 points and got you challenging in the first place.
Less than half the price of Cantona.
So Schmeichel was a better signing.
Just not as sexy and memorable because he's a goalkeeper.

Ah I see. I've got him filtered
Looking away from United, I'd suggest the best ever signing was Alfredo Di Stefano.
Di Stefano joined Madrid in 1953. At the time, Franco had already been in power for 14 years, but Madrid hadn't won the league for 20 years, going all the way back to the pre-Civil War days of the Spanish Second Republic.
Di Stefano made an immediate impact, top-scoring in the league with 27 goals in 28 games, leading Madrid to the title for the first time since 1933. They retained the title the following year, again with Di Stefano as top scorer.
The following year was the inaugural season of the European Cup, a trophy they won in its first 5 editions.
Di Stefano scored in all 5 of those finals, and in addition to those cups, Madrid went on to win 8 league titles in his 11 seasons at the club.
It's pretty safe to say that without Di Stefano, Madrid would never have become the club they are now.

Cantona was the final missing puzzle piece. Yes arguably he was the best signing because he got you over the line.
But prior to that the most important piece of that puzzle that got you near the line was Schmeichel.
Purely from a points contribution against amount spent on the player I'd put Schmeichel ahead of Cantona.
Of course there are other factors which makes Cantona so special, so I think both opinions are valid.

As been said UTD made a lot of great signings, and Schmeichel was another great. I don’t know if you looked but I actually put Van Der Sarr’s name forward...
but ultimately an Outfield player is more or less gonna get the vote.
Cantona was the catalyst for all that came after, so he is the more important for sure. Big Pete a very, very close second though. Fergie learnt early on from Sir Matt that to win stuff you had to build on a top goalkeeper.
