You could see it working better in the first half when England were decent. Tripper stayed high and wide, 3 at the back in buildup. Trent drifted right, Foden drifted central and Bellingham could wander where he wanted.
Second half it was all over the place and I agree TAA was pants. His much-lauded passing was unreliable and he offered nothing (again).
Get Gordon on to hug the wing and Foden and Bellingham can share the central space, and drop TAA. That way Trippier can tuck into the midfield if we need an extra body alongside Rice to form the old 3-box-3 in buildup, which will avoid the fact Trippier isn't suited to playing high on the left - Gordon will offer pace and penetration and it'll also free Foden up to play where he's actually good.
Seems daft to force our whole left flank into uncomfortable roles just to accommodate TAA, a player who doesn't do anything in an England shirt anyway
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It comes down to Safegate being brave and having a central 3 of Rice Bells and Foden. He isn't a brave, far from it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bellingham and Foden would leave Rice (and England's already dodgy defense) exposed if they did that. Conor Gallagher is probably the best of England's limited options to support Rice in CM.

I don’t think it would tbh, not if they get the high press better sorted. It’s more that they haven’t played it enough and it’s not Southgate’s style, can’t see him changing to it in a tournament at all.
It’d make us more exposed without making us anymore creative.
Depends on the game. That or even just a 442 would have been better against Serbia for example and made us a lot more creative, we only really had one way of attacking against them and as soon as they adjusted, we struggled.
Whenever we’ve had two of the midfielders on a higher line we’ve struggled in attack because we’ve struggled to progress the ball, and when we’ve got it to those areas it’s often too congested and we lack the intricacy and off ball movement create from that area.
We look by far our best when we attack from the wings. It’s what this group of players are most comfortable with.
It’s a shame that Shaw and James have had their fitness problems and Sterling, Grealish and Rashford have been dropped due to their poor form. I think we’d be a potentially tournament winning team if we had those available.

We’ve never tried Bellingham and Foden doing that though, id quite like to see it. It’s a shame he didn’t try it in the qualifiers just to see what it’d be like, they link up well when they’re close together and if we have Saka and Gordon or Eze on the wings then they can keep the width without needing both fullbacks to be progressive, it’d suit having Trippier at left back more too. That or go for a 442 and properly utilise the wingers - play the same wingers and push Bellingham up more, him dropping deep in the second half was the main reason for us struggling.
The system he’s employing, I’d much rather have the players you mention and like we’ve discussed already, I’d have taken a few anyway. I just wouldn’t use the system he’s using with the squad he’s got now and that he’s chosen to use it and use the players he’s using is worrying.
Only one game though. Let’s see what he does next game.
Granted we’ve not had much opportunity, but I still don’t think it’d work because of Foden’s issues out of possession, issues in possession in an England shirt and the issues that are presented behind them when we station two of the midfielders too high when we’re trying to build up play. The latter is the biggest issue I’ve had with it, and when the press doesn’t work we become too easy to counter against.
People are just massively overrating our players and over complicating the issue. We need to mitigate our weaknesses and maximise our strengths. Form and availability is probably why Southgate’s been caught between two stalls, but he just needs to simply it to get balance right so that we can get the best from Kane and Saka.
All this crap about Trent, Bellingham and Foden does my head in. They aren’t good enough for England to justify the excuses and the calls for changing what makes England good to fit them into the side.
This is the same thing that happened with Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes when Owen and Beckham were clearly our two best players that we had to fit the team around.
My fear is Southgate is falling into the trap that previous managers did before with them, which is one of the things I’ve liked most about him where he’s always rewarded England form over club form and hype.
i think when playin 4 england, Foden is wurried about his corner n if it generaitin enuff $$$ too make Big Colin knot give him AIDS

If you add Gallagher to the midfield then we are sacrificing even more passing ability while retaining Foden out of position and less able to affect a game. For me that's a double negative.
I was all for TAA in CM but the way we set up and the limited movement of the front three takes away much of what he can give us from CM....but we still need a baller there because Rice is more of a carrier than a passer.
On the left with Foden drifting and Trippier on his weak foot, we offer nothing.
I would rather see Konsa there with detail to hang back more. Put Gordon or Eze on that side and have Rice Foden Bells in the middle. With Stones stepping forward at times and Walker and Konsa being more defensive we can give the attackers a bit more freedom on front of a defence that sits a bit more.
If things need changing up the Toney and TAA is a good combo to go more direct if we need a goal.
It annoys me that we are looking at this and finding solutions during the tournament. Negligence from Southgate IMO

Thing is he’s already fallen into that trap with who he’s selected for the squad (well, who he’s left out) and I get why some people think it has but I’d argue it hasn’t worked doing it how he has been doing it either.

To an extent, yes. Guess we’ll have to wait and see if he changes things that are necessary.
Whilst we looked okay defensively, we appeared limp and lacked aggression especially in the second half.
I am sorry but I do not see Foden as a quality international player. At City they play a baiting game, with passing to death rituals to tire opponents out. This requires months and years of indoctrination into Pep’s style of play with little or no deviation.
Take a player out of that environment and then ask them to play a completely different style with players you play with infrequently is a stretch.
Look at Walker, great speed style but watch how many of his passes are either backwards or sideways. Why does he not use his speed to take on defenders?
We used to call Ray Wilkins “The Crab” because of his reluctance to play any passes forward.
Kane had a very quiet game, but is it any surprise really? He has obviously been told to stay up top to allow Bellingham freedom of the pitch. However, if you restrict your top scorer to this then you need to supply the service accordingly, which England did not do.
We need more energy and Bellingham cannot do it all on his own.
I liked Bowen when he came on, and I would have brought Gordon on as well in the second half and possibly either Toney or Watkins. Eze is another potential game changer too.
We have to lose this mentality of just hanging on to what we have got and go to close the game out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why not?
Because it requires a lot of work on the training pitch that teams don’t get at international level. Which is why they don’t use it.
Disagree strongly with that. It's not a complicated instruction. No more difficult than what England did on Sunday, which was having Walker invert to RCB and Trippier basically playing as a left winger. We're not talking about intricate interplay or passing patterns here, it's just a basic positional shift when in possession.
And if Trippier found it too complicated, Southgate could just ask Gomez to invert from LB considering he's done that for Liverpool this season too.
It really is, because it relies on the principles of positional play. It would leave England massively exposed in the wide areas in defensive transition, which wasn’t the case with how we set up against Serbia. Gomez wasn’t doing this for Liverpool it was Trent that was stepping into the midfield, and it left them hugely exposed in the wide channels defensively this season. City don’t even bother using it that much nowadays, and that’s with the best squad in England at Pep Guardiola.
You can disagree if you like, but there’s a reason international coaches have not looked to replicate this set up, it’s too risky for tournament football.
Rewatched most of the game earlier today, wouldn’t be surprised if Southgate doesn’t make any changes or if he does they’re minimal. The first half performance was pretty good, it was decision making that let us down. Could and should have had half a dozen very very good chances.
