14 goals in 52 apps is just not good enough for what we need.

Season before last he got just 2 goals in 19 apps.

We should be aiming higher for me. He's behind a well past his sell by date Memphis Depay in the Dutch set up. That's a player who wasn't good enough for United about 7 years ago.

Going by raw statistics rather than concrete analysis of his skill set, the same logic would have dismissed Real Sociedad's young striker Alexander Isak in 2022. In the absence of giant budgets, United need to learn how to make smart acquisitions of players who have the tools to be excellent before they become consistent in output. We simply can't afford to fill all the major gaps in our squad with ready-made elite players.

I say this as someone who's never seen Zirkzee play, so I have no idea. But I don't think this kind of thing should be the be-all end-all in our CF search.

Personally, I think the priority is finding someone who offers something different to Hojlund. I.e is good in tight spaces, and excels with his back to goal and at bringing others into play. In other words, what Martial offered us in the 22/23 season on the occasions he was fit. With a player like that in the team, goals will start coming from elsewhere. It's one of the things which helped bring the most out of Rashford.

If we also want that player to be a ready made goalscorer, well, you're looking at the very top end of the CF market there and we obviously don't have that money to spend on one player.

But I'd also say it isn't that uncommon for a talented CF to suddenly find his feet in goalscoring terms in the right environment. I remember people turning their nose up at Isak due to his goalscoring record at Sociedad. It was clear to anyone who'd seen him play a bit that there was a player there.

I am joking about spending all our money on Isak as we clearly need a few players

However in a bizarro world where we did just buy Isak I wouldn’t hate this side…

Onana
Dalot Maguire Martinez Shaw
Mainoo
Bruno Mount
Garnacho Isak Rashford

To be clear - I’m not saying that would win the title or anything even near that but it would be exciting and perhaps the season after we could invest on other positions if we had more money πŸ˜‰
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Still be a horrible lack of depth when the usual suspects get injured.

Would love to sign Isak though, really rate him. Due to Newcastles PSR situation it would be possible for somebody to sign him, I doubt they'd sell to us though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeh, he is a class player.

I don’t get you Robb. You want ETH and then propose a team that continues to expose our biggest flaw under him. Getting ran through in midfield.

We need a proper DM that can cover ground to play next to Mainoo otherwise next season will likely be more of the same.

Our biggest flaw under him is his weird insistence of playing a low block in games at the same time as pressing high which leads to a vacuum in midfield.

My formation above isn’t some kind of answer or anything logic. Just showing that at least by having a world class striker our very flawed tactics would at least bring us more goals.

If Zirkzee can help the team collectively perform better in attack then his goalscoring numbers won’t be a massive issue, especially if we can improve the right wing and Rashford stops playing like a cuuuunt.

You'd think this was a given, purely look at goal to game ratio is short sighted.

On the upside, it sounds like Jose wants to take Lindelof off our hands.

Reportedly Bologna’s best player last season as they overachieved finishing fifth, Serie A YPOTS, five man of the match awards in 32 starts, highly rated by Italian pundits, only turned 23 last month and available at a very affordable price.

Can you point to where we might alternatively secure 20 goals a season for €40m?

I’d prefer Jose takes his own life, but taking Lindelof is still good news.

So your solution to finding a back up / rotation option to a talented yet very inexperienced and inconsistent
Rasmus Hojlund is to basically buy the Dutch version?

Two inexperienced strikers is better than one I suppose. πŸ˜‚

How is he a 20 a season striker either? He's averaging a goal every 4 games at Bologna.

Id rather spend a bit more than 40m on someone I know will score goals. Toney for example. This lad is totally unproven.

I didn’t say he’s a 20 goal striker, did I? I asked where you thought we might be able to pick one up for the same kind of money Zirkzee is being touted at. (Spoiler: We can’t.)

If we want to sign four players to compete for first team berths this summer, we’re going to have to be very smart about how we spend. And that won’t include blowing twice what we’d pay for Zirkzee on Toney. We simply don’t have that kind of cash, by any and all accounts.

posted on 19/6/24

I think we will have plenty to spend. Worst case, the ownership can put some.dosh into the kitty.

posted on 19/6/24

Whoever we get needs to ultimately be happy with being a rotation option or long term backup to Hoijlund unless he has a poor spell or lengthy injury.

Would think Toney would want to go somewhere to be first choice every week 90 minutes.

United linked with Jonathan David now for £25m. Not seen much of him either to be honest.

Pretty average but probably worth a punt at that price
