City players playing for their nations

It definitely applies to Foden because England play a completely different way to City. Haven't really watched the rest for their countries close enough to judge apart from Grealish - where i don't really notice a difference.

The manager's style of play and integration amongst other players definitely has an impact. You can't just buy the perfect players to compliment Foden for Emgland, and of you try to adjust, for example Bellingham, to get the best out of Foden then you sacrifice what he brings to the table

Pep destroys individualism like a communist leader for the sake of the greater good and his players can’t think for themselves outside of his commie bubble

I've always thought Grealish has looked good playing for England.

The others though, it's fairly obvious why.

Foden will never flourish playing on the left wing which is why Pep gives him a roving position on the right.

City's defenders have played well so far, Akanji, Gvardiol and Dias have shone

Foden I thought was the obvious one in this regard.

I do wonder about how heavily the City players rely on a) attacking patterns and b) very specific instructions in terms of the parts of the field they should be occupying at any given time.

Habits are difficult to break.

Yeah, the defenders don’t seem to have the same issues. The same could be said of the likes of Rodri and Gundogan.

If true, we should be voting communism. It clearly works a treat.

😅 just repeating what this Liverpool fan at work says to me. It’s weird as he’s obsessed with Grealish and says he’ll never forgive Pep for destroying him. This Liverpool fan is from Malaysia btw

Yep, this is the case for a lot of players who can't transition their form from club to international football though, and the sign of good coaching.

I think it's also about character. Bellingham or Gerrard for example, could go to any team in the world and they'd have been confident and demanding that they can contribute.

I think Phil Foden is a different type of character, maybe similar to Scholes in that aspect. Their style of play relies on those around them.

Right now, we've a manager who puts pragmatism first, and that means you won't get the best out of players like Foden and Trent, which leaves us largely unbalanced.

I think you are forgetting that things like world cups are every 4 years and City are only around 12 years old. So realistically there have only been the 2014, 2018 and 2022 world cups to go on to judge City players. It's not enough data.

An interesting corollary of your question, Rosso, is whether players who have thrived under coaches who give their players more latitude to take the initiative / spontaneously find solutions on the pitch tend to do better in international football where it's impossible to drill teams to the same degree. Are Ancelotti players better at international football than Guardiola players?

Guardiola's players at 2008-2012 Spain seemed to do OK but maybe there was a critical mass of Barcelona players who could replicate their club chemistry at national level.

I agree with all of that. If Southgate just wants someone to play on the left wing, he should just pick Gordon.

Gundogan’s always been rubbish for Germany. And Rodri isn’t anywhere near the same level for Spain as he is for City.

Think it may be due to the standard expected in England vs for the Spain or Germany national teams. Being a midfielder for City or Liverpool then you are expected to be the level of Milner, Henderson or even Trent. For Spain or Germany you are expected to be the level of Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets or Kroos or the like for Germany.

Just levels innit.

I thought KDB and Bernardo both played well in their games, Foden did too in the first half.

Ultimately they won’t be as good as they are at City as they don’t have the same time to work on the patterns. Foden in the first half was a good example of that, there were at least three occasions where he’d broken the lines and had he got the ball been in a great position but didn’t get the pass.

I don’t think it’s a Pep thing though. Spain won in 2010 when he was managing Barca, Germany won in 2014 when he was managing Bayern and we had our best chance of winning in a long time in 2018 when he was managing City.

you say something ridiculous, get called on it and now apparently it was a Liverpool fan who said it! Genius. Let's try it.

Messi is overrated. Can't really play football because he's a shell controlled by space mice. A Man Utd fan just told me that. Honest.
