And we’re 2 points ahead of the Danes with the weakest opponent still to come. In the Euro 2021 semi we scraped past Denmark in extra time - we were never going to just away them aside, I don’t understand people who thought we were going to beat them comfortably.
The only important thing about the group is to win it - which we’re on course for doing. At this point in Euro 21 we had beaten Croatia 1-0 and drawn 0-0 with Scotland. Last World Cup we had beaten a poor Iran 6-2 and then drawn 0-0 with the USA - we won both those groups as well

Club form of these players tells me they can play at a higher level.
Southgate - is a problem, a big problem but his record is second only to sir Alf - so I’m not sure what we do exactly at this point with him.
He needs to give up the Trent experiment, he needs to hope the Shaw gamble pays off and he needs to get Foden, Bellingham and Kane firing with Saka - who needs to get his fitness to last 90 mins.
It’s not how you start though, it’s how you finish. Only Spain have impressed so far
The sad indictment is that I expected Denmark to dominate us when I saw the team sheet.
Look, we have the players capable of winning this tournament. I just don't think we have the manager capable of winning it.
Talking about conserving energy after the first goal, when he has one of the deepest squads in the competition. Saying that we have no natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips. These are massive red flags on top of the actual in game management.
Had we got Spain and Italy in our group, we'd be out. We've made hard work of a piece easy group with mulit million pound trophy winning players. We'll turn up and beat Slovenia knowing we'll up end getting someone like Kazakhstan in round of 16 and before you know it, we've ghosted through to the quarters. Jammy side under Southgate
so odd when people moan about perceived moaning.
I think most peoples gripes are because weve been here before.
If we had a history of playing crap and winning stuff then i'd understand your point of view.
But it's not easy to flick a switch, we need to pick up perfomances and quickly.
To be fair to Southgate, he has one magnificent attribute … getting spawny draws at tournament football. Obviously Eng are in a pretty meh group (again), but hadn’t realised that if they win it, they only get a best 3rd placed team in the last 16 AND guaranteed to avoid another group winner in the last 8. So basically can’t meet any of the big guns until the semis, as usual, if the draw works out as expected. Only Portugal’s group winners have the same fortunate scenario.

I’m on board the Southgate out train, even if he wins this tournament - I’ve had enough of and that Phillips comment mental.
You wonder why he has brought Mainoo, Gallagher and Wharton (particularly Wharton) along is he is going to pick a right back at CM. Yet he doesn’t pick some of the talent we have at Left mid and we’re left with an impotent Foden drifting infield with no Shaw to overlap.
Our players are that good though that we could win this in spite of Southgate

We wouldn’t - the problem with the groups these days is that 3rd place is good enough for most sides. We would have lost to Italy and Spain but beat Albania convincingly and got through that way.
I mean Croatia only have a point - they genuinely stand a fairly decent chance of qualifying if they draw with Italy

Well, I think we have as good as chance as the others to be honest. Only Spain have impressed me so far:
Germany have been the second best side - BUT, if they both win their groups, which seems an almost certainty now, they will meet in the quarters with one going home but able to tell their public - we were brilliant in the group stage.
France weren’t great against Austria, Italy have been meh, Croatia have been craaaap, Netherlands scraped past a Lewandowski less Poland, Belgium lost their opening game and Portugal had to score with the last kick to get past the Czechs.
The point being - what’s happening in the group stage is no indicator of what is to come, there is little pressure on these group games for the better sides as there is next to no jeopardy unless drawn in Group B.
Can England do it when the pressure will be on? Will Mbappe ever score a goal in the Euros, will a host finally win a comp since 84, are Spain going to be the start well end badly side, will Belgium fall flat again, will Portugal and Ronaldo add a second title.
No one knows and too many conclusions are being drawn from games that are little more than warm ups for the proper tournament starting a week today
I think we have as good as chance as the others to be honest.

I disagree. Germany have some players putting in great performances. Spain look well sorted as a team, as always, maybe just missing a top striker. France stuttered but Mbappe scores that 1-on-1 90% of the time, they would've been pretty comfortable. We scraped a win against Serbia and got thoroughly outplayed against Denmark.
Of course if we win it I'll be delighted but performances from the whole XI and decisions from the manager need to improve quickly and drastically. No use dressing it up like it's great and people are wrong to be frustrated

Like I said though, only 1 of Germany and Spain can progress to the semi finals and neither are on our side of the draw if we win the group - no point even thinking about those sides at this point.
Mbappe has never scored a goal at a European Championship and now has a broken nose that I think will definitely affect him. Austria caused them all sorts of problems with that press and Grillitsch should have scored.
If we win our group, then the sides likely standing between us and the final are - 3rd place from group D or E - so maybe Austria/Ukraine/Slovakia. Quarter final - Italy/Croatia/Switzerland. Semi final - France or Holland. I cannot say I’ve seen any of those sides do anything particularly worrying at this point - Croatia are particularly poor at the moment and Italy look no better than us. We will beat this Dutch side that our still reliant on Wout Weghorst. The fly in the ointment is the French - pound for pound the best side in the world - even in our very best form they can beat us.
These group games matter nada

Italy are the holders and Croatia were the second best European team at the World Cup. We also likely have France on our route if we make it that far.
I would much rather have been in the Belgian or Portugal groups that honestly look a doddle.
The last World Cup we had France in the quarters after the African champions in the round of 16
The Euros before we had the Czechs and the Croats in our group, Germany in round 16.
I’m not seeing many favourable draws
Like I said though, only 1 of Germany and Spain can progress to the semi finals and neither are on our side of the draw if we win the group - no point even thinking about those sides at this point.

Ok so I think it is relevant to talk about teams better than us because you claimed that we stand as good a chance of winning as anyone else. Also you just said
"These group games matter nada"
Well they do because it decides whether we have to play Germany next or not.. also it's the only way we've got to judge how we're doing. I get what you're saying - that performances don't really matter as long as we win the group. But it's still reasonable to be frustrated at poor performances. Also you look at others teams, like Austria right now and have to ask why can they do it? It's pissanoying

That's the best interview I've seen Southgate give. There might be hope yet.

We were wrong strike team just admit it.
We’ve got a cracking set of players managed by an absolute fraud who doesn’t have a clue how to get the best out of them. Can’t wait for him to fvck off.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Like I said though, only 1 of Germany and Spain can progress to the semi finals and neither are on our side of the draw if we win the group - no point even thinking about those sides at this point.

To be fair to Southgate, he has one magnificent attribute … getting spawny draws at tournament football. Obviously Eng are in a pretty meh group (again), but hadn’t realised that if they win it, they only get a best 3rd placed team in the last 16 AND guaranteed to avoid another group winner in the last 8. So basically can’t meet any of the big guns until the semis, as usual, if the draw works out as expected. Only Portugal’s group winners have the same fortunate scenario.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not quite true - we’re on course to play Croatia/Italy in the Quarters - the last Euros winners and 3rd place in the World Cup.
There was only one tough group in this competition group B one semi tough group - Group D. Our group is no harder/weaker a group than all of Germany, Portugal and Belgiums groups.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK. I’ll put it another way, the bookies strongly favour 5 countries to win it … in order, France, Germany, Eng, Spain and Portugal. No-one else is even close in the odds. Eng can’t meet ANY of those other 4 until the semis, at worst … but you don’t think that’s a typically “favourable” Southgate draw? Croatia are way past their best, and Italy barely kicked the ball last night against Spain. All about opinions though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Italy are the holders and Croatia were the second best European team at the World Cup.

Ok so I think it is relevant to talk about teams better than us because you claimed that we stand as good a chance of winning as anyone else. Also you just said
"These group games matter nada"
Well they do because it decides whether we have to play Germany next or not.. also it's the only way we've got to judge how we're doing. I get what you're saying - that performances don't really matter as long as we win the group. But it's still reasonable to be frustrated at poor performances. Also you look at others teams, like Austria right now and have to ask why can they do it? It's pissanoying
