Fixing any one priority position won't fix the team. I'd say if we can significantly improve three or four key areas, we should see improvement overall. Central defence is essential given departure of Varane and lack of quality when Lisandro is out. A DM who can cover ground and is better in tight spaces that Casemiro starts to knit the rest of the midfield options together. Cover/competition for Hojlund. And a right back who can attack.
This is why I'm open to spending small sums on players who aren't necessarily proven or going to be part of a title push. The cumulative effect of having good enough players with the right profile is bigger at this point than bringing in one or two elite talents while leaving gaping holes in the squad. I'd say that approach has characterised Arsenal's team-building during their renaissance. Young talent with potential to be great + decent (not world-beating) players with the right profile.

One thing that Arsenal have done though is shop in the PL which for me is something we should be doing more of. The likes of Rice, Trossard, Havertz, White, Jesus etc have been savvy buys for a manager who is adept in improving players.
Ten Hag hasn’t really shown he can improve players so I think we’re all still waiting to see what his ideal demographic of player is.
Ah, so your angle on recruitment is a subset of your ETA-out stance?!
Is it fair to say that most of the Arsenal PL buys have been at the later stage of squad building - first getting a more coherent, competitive squad and then setting sights on challenging for titles? I can't think of many PL or experienced players bought between Arteta's appointment and the summer of 2022.
Starting CB, starting DM, backup/rotation striker are all required.

Not particularly an ETH out stance, he’s staying for now no matter what I think. I’m just curious as to what type of player he (or now Ineos) want and how that gels with what works or not
What Rosso listed. After that a RW, RB, LB and another CB but that’s unlikely to happen this summer.

I really hope we don't waste 35m on this Zirkzee guy. His goal record is really poor and even Weghorst is preferred to him off the bench for the Dutch which says it all.
ETH should get absolutely no say whatsoever on transfers going forwards and if he doesn't like that he shouldn't sign his new deal.

Doesn't seem like Ten Hag made the decision here. People seeing Dutch and think this. Anything other than both being Dutch actually making this a Ten Hag signing?
And Weghorst has always been a sort of go to target man for the Dutch (either starts or off the bench). He reminds me of a few strikers who do well for country but aren't much at club level (you have Milan Barons and that Northern Ireland Striker a few years ago).
He's young, good price range, a different set of skills and scored more this season than Weghorst did at United.

He's not only Dutch but also a former Bayern reserves player. ETH managed the Bayern reserves when Pep was there as head coach didn't he?
I think it's incredibly likely this is a ETH led target. I hope it falls through personally.
We finished bottom half of the PL for goals scored and some of our fans are getting excited about somebody who averages 1 in 4.5 games for his current club.
We are sleep walking into becoming an absolute nothing club. We need far better players than him to close the gap on the big clubs.
Just been reading that he only made the Dutch Euro squad because of a few late injuries too. He wasn't expected to be called up at all.
Have higher standards reds.

Yeah a LB is absolutely essential imo. In terms of players moving on, Shaw really should be towards or at the very top of the list, he's totally unreliable. And Malacia passed away over a year ago
CB, CM, CF & FB (LB ideally) I think are absolutely essential. If we don't address each of those positions adequately then we'll have problems next season.
In reality we need two CB's given that we needed another one last season and our best one has left the club already. We probably also need two CM's given Amrabat will be let go, and one or both of Casemiro and Eriksen will be gone as well. That really only leaves us with one proper CM player in Mainoo.
And we also need another wide attacker. Sancho & Greenwood will be gone one way or another, Antony isn't good enough and that leaves two kids (Amad & Garnacho) and an out of sorts Rashford. Someone who can play on both sides of the pitch would be very useful (Nico Williams?).
Isn't Williams on incredibly high wages because Bilbao don't spend any (or very little) money on transfers.
