I've heard a lot this morning saying Ronaldo is a self obsessed, narcissistic, attention seeker etc which I'm sure to get to the level he has, there probably are those traits in him and there's no doubting Ronaldo is in the top 10 best players of all time but to me last night he looked his age and some and that excessive or disproportionate outpouring of emotion was a man having a mini breakdown in my opinion.
Those tears to me weren't just about a missed penalty I
think they also represented the realisation it's virtually
the end of the road for him career wise plus I also think
it was an emotional release from his own personal tragedy of losing a child not so long ago.
I think when he takes stock after this tournament he
should retire and I actually think he could be as good a
manager as Zidane if not better if he still has the hunger
and wants to stay involved in the game...we shall see.
Good point. Does Ronaldo just not have a plan after football? He doesn't want to ever have to face up to not playing anymore? That seems quite clear.
Full credit to him for taking the penalty in the shootout after. I personally can't see him being a very good manager, often great players struggle accepting that nearly everyone they coach will be inferior to themselves and incapable of reaching their standards. He's too emotional to be able to coach at a high level imo.
1982
I would say that coaching is more about the ability you have to teach and communicate than how good you were as a player anyway.
Funny but I agree he is a very unlikeable character. We go to Portugal every year, I’m learning the language and they are passionate about their football. I should really want them to do well but for some reason (I guess my dislike for players like him and Fernandez) I’m always wanting them to get stuffed.
It might be the Leeds in me but I don’t think it’s as deep
as that. I just don’t like either of them and if pushed also a few others in the Portuguese team!
Just something about them.

He’s looked his age at anything close to the highest level of the game for a few years now. Flashes of the old magic but mainly well off the pace.
1982, VC: agreed. I think Ronaldo is unsuitable to management for similar reasons that Keano's managerial career failed. Both in terms of personality and in how they look at football, there's huge emphasis on maximum individual commitment. This leads to inability to empathise with someone who doesn't attain maniacally high standards, but also, I think, an underappreciation of the role of systems. As a commentator, Keane tends to diagnose lack of application whenever there's a bad performance (there was an interesting counterpoint a few years ago when he was sat next to Vieira, who broke down the tactical reasons why France were playing badly after Keane had attributed it to lack of effort). Ronaldo these days often makes decisions / takes up positions that seem to have more to do with his quest for personal heroism than what's most beneficial for the team.

I think one of the biggest issues with Ronaldo in his latter years Is that he drops deep to get involved in the game however he never actually offers anything on the ball and just gets in the way.
Even at his brilliant peak his strength was never getting on the ball in deep areas and playing others in like say a Harry Kane can.
Ronaldo scored 10 goals in 9 Euro qualifying games for Portugal. If you're still that productive at his age, no reason to retire.

I agree. I don't think he should retire but he should accept a lesser role. Can’t remember who they played but I’d imagine the majority of those goals were against absolute minnows.
I think the notion of people disliking Ronaldo for his arrogance and narcissism is BS, tbh. Players like Maradonna or George Best were no less narcissistic and people found them somewhat amusing and entertaining precisely for their larger-than-life image. I think with Ronaldo, it's more aesthetics and appearances than the actual substance of his character. Something about his preening that many dislike.
Bit of a strange comparison? Maradona and Best were nothing like Ronaldo. Ronaldo lacks charisma unlike those 2 who had it in abundance.

He scored against Slovakia, Iceland and Bosnia and didn't even play their 9-0 win over Luxembourg. Qualifying groups are always easy for top seeded teams. 10 goals in 9 matches is still very impressive.
To those saying Ronaldo would make a good manager. He lacks the qualities of those proven managers who have gone and managed around the world in multiple countries such as Pep/Mourinho/Rooney/Ancelotti etc. It takes more than just being a top player to become a top manager. You need people management skills and a tactical brain. Something the managerial greats above have but I don't think Ronaldo does.

Charisma is a matter of opinion. Many people find Trump the most charismatic figure since Jesus Christ and some think his grotesqueries should only be appealing to 13-year-old boys. If you personally dislike Ronaldo because you think he's a self-absorbed arrogant narcissist, then you should also dislike Maradonna or George Best. It seems for Ronaldo's narcissism to be appreciated, he should have sniffed more coke, and drank more alcohol, and bragged more about how many women he had seex with and just behaved more outlandishly - so that his outrageous conduct can better mask his arrogance.

But people aren't claiming they dislike Ronaldo because he lacks charisma (I certainly believe he has charisma). They're referring specifically to his perceived narcissism and arrogance - but they ignore these character traits in other players they like. Even Messi (who I love) has always had it in him to throw a strop when he doesn't get his way. I remember he and Pep had some issues when Pep wanted to rest him for games, cos the guy wanted to play every single minute, and he's just about the only player Pep ever managed who Pep could tolerate for leisurely strolling around the pitch and not pressing because Pep was probably terrified of getting on his bad side and damaging team morale. And there was his PSG stint where he apparently got along with hardly anyone and the fans themselves couldn't wait to see the back of him. Ronaldo isn't that different from most egotistical footballers.

Yes, people dislike Ronaldo because of his narcissism and arrogance which is amplified because he lacks charisma.
Messi obviously has arrogance (and a level of narcissism too, he wouldn't be the player he is without it), but unlike Ronaldo seems happy to keep out of the spotlight when he can. Hence why he doesn't model his own brand of underwear or have 2 of his own museums.
Ronaldo is different from other players because he's Ronaldo and he has created an huge brand off the back of his talents and character, one that lacks charisma.
