Glad the Ronaldo Messi debate is over though. Football is a team game and Messi is great individually and also very much more of a team player. Ronaldo not so much.

Unless he’s acting like a dictator and destroying Barca financially.
Don't think Ronaldo was the problem with Portugal. This reminds me of the time the press called for Beckham to be dropped for Bentley and other options in the right before asking for Beckham to be called back up.
The press and the fickleness of fans at play.

I was the few not on the Beckham out bandwagon when nearly everyone wanted him dropped and said he was a problem.
I could be wrong and all that. I do think there were other issues.
Playing with Ronaldo is like playing with ten men. His only value is putting the ball in the net and he failed to do that. He’s a big problem for the Portugal team.
He is such a negative influence on the pitch as he is a magnet for players to have to pass to him and they almost feel bad not doing it. His entire schtick is to stand there and have everything end up on his head and force the entire side to feed him.
On a separate note, Pepe - what a player still. 41 years old and was immense.
I wasn’t pretty disappointed with Pepe this Euros. Not enough shiiiithousing.
Wanna see my schedule for football tomorrow 😂 Gonna sleep in a min.
2am - England Switzerland
5am - Türkiye vs Netherlands
8am - Colombia vs Panama
11am - Uruguay (the most fun international side to watch) vs Brazil
All quarter finals.

He’s not even sharp enough anymore to put the ball in the net at this level.

Yeah he looks done at this level. If his ego wasn’t so big, and he could accept a back up role, he could maybe have some value as a sub. But he obviously just cannot do that.

Yep and Martinez has obviously seen what happened at United and bottled it.
What’s weird is that the last manager did drop him and he’s an extremely safe manager.
Agreed. Was it a condition of Martinez taking the job that he has to play Ronaldo? We’ll probably never know.
I’ve no idea. But there’s clearly plenty of internal and external pressure to play Ronaldo.
No doubt. What should have happened and it’s easy for us to say is that Martinez should have sat down with Ronaldo and said you’re now at a stage where you would be best as an squad player or impact sub and do you want to continue your international career under those terms.
As others have said, it isn’t obvious the politics around Ronaldo. But the player he was this tournament was a liability.
Martinez himself did a great job at Wigan and Everton & then took a Belgian team who were hugely overrated to be the second best team in the whole of the 2018 tournament and only got beaten by the best. He’s clearly not a top manager but he’s a lot better than made out.
