This is the sort of thing that well only really knows with hindsight. As much as many of us love to pretend we have a clue what's going on, none of us do.

All I can really do at this point is be cautiously optimistic that we will see improvements over the next couple of years and I'll only know of that's the case once it's happened and we see the results.

What I would say is just be wary of putting too much stock into things like "first choice". Was Todibo our "first choice"? Do you even know if it's as simple as first, second and third choice? What if we have two separate profiles for centre back, with different first choices for each one?

Even something as simple as that assumption can lead you right down the garden path. I've never seen Todibo2as "first cuocie" but I feel like we saw it as an easy and reAsonabl deal to bring in a CB who may not need to start every game but has potential.

Multiple windows under the previous regime seemed good at the time. We can only judge it once we've seen the fruits of that labour though and in the absence of any actual information, I'll typically try to be optimistic because it's preferable to instant cynicism, which is just exhausting for me personally.

If I had to completely guess - Branthwaite is a standalone signing due to him playing predominantly on the left side. We're after one of Yoro/De Ligt - Yoro is the first choice, but in the likely event it doesn't happen, we have the De Ligt deal ready to go.

Pure conjecture and I could be way off. But if there is a scenario that goes something like that, why anyone would think it's a bad thing I have no idea.
