Didn’t even know they had financial difficulties or were relegated. I remember back in the day they used to be regulars in the CL.

Think a lot of traditional French giants are struggling, or have been. St Etienne were close to going as well a couple of years back.

PSG being owned by oil hasn't helped the French clubs. Most of their spending is outside those clubs so they don't see a lot of the new money.

Surely they could get a consortium of ex players to buy them or even Mike Ashley

Sad news, shame the fsg deal collapsed.

Shame. They were a top team. Hope they comeback. Parma did it and back next year in serie A.

wtf? Can’t believe this isn’t on the news or social media. I remember Blanc won them a few trophies when he managed them

Very sad, Gourcuff’s goal vs PSG is one of my favourites of all time

Am I missing something here? They’ve been relegated, the club hasn’t folded.

Meh, buy some histoire, Le Sevco, Le Nouveau Bordeaux, lots of pretendy stuff but fans will swallow it.

Shame, I thought we would buy them

Ah, so they’ve not technically folded but have given up professional status and released all the players, which is near enough the same.

they dont own anything, dont own their stadium etc? so idk how they come back

It happens a lot in footy, look at Man City, decades in the lower leagues floundering around and then they bought a few titles which they will get stripped of soon.

Liverpool should be held accountable here. Pulled out of buying them and then they go bust? Smells like Carillion to me.

yes has happened a number of times to big clubs who then started again in the amateur leagues

Napoli in Italy
Real Oviedo in Spain
Strasbourg in France

all examples of clubs usually in the top flight who've gone bankrupt & restarted

posted on 26/7/24

This is a bit different, though. I don’t think those clubs ever gave up their professional status.

Rangers in Scotland.

They stayed professional though in the lower leagues, playing against a bunch of rank amateurs.

They still do, tbf.

CSKA Sofia and Steaua Bucharest (now FCSB) it happened to as well, both clubs are fighting with another club for their own status (CSKA 1948 & CSA Steaua București)

Any good players worth free transfers then?
