He didn't really have much choice sending Trossard off.

He did because he didn't make the same decisions this year or last year with certain Man c players (Kovacic) , where he openly admitted to 'not wanting to spoil the game etc' although he should have blatantly sent him off,.so, yeah, he had a choice.

All the refs are pretty poor these days it seems, what makes it worse is the PGMOL refuse to ever admit fault, instead continually making terrible excuses for poor calls, even if that means completely contradicting themselves continually.

I don't think it helps that Oliver has such a punchable face. Hasn't he also been paid to ref in the UAE which has links to the owners of City?

I appreciate that being a footie ref is tough going, but the standard really is poor. Communication skills seem terrible, and I hate this 'not wanting to spoil the game' attitude.

Ultimately you ref the game to the law, it's up to players to make sure they adhere to it. It's the inconsistency - I would rather they were tough and make players learn to behave, then they would see a change in attitude from players.

But there also needs to be rule changes to support them properly, it's the one area of the game that is so behind

Trossard's second yellow was more of a yellow than Rice's second last week and although both were harsh IMO, you have to be pretty stupid to do what Trossard did after the Rice incident.

The problem is the complete lack of consistency.

Another horrendous weekend for refs.

The funniest was Anthony Taylor, who was not given a game due to poor performance last week, still got stuck in and angered both benches . We often hear VAR shouldn't re-ref games, but now we have 4th officials jumping in. The ref was more than happy with the MGW tackle, not sure why he allowed Taylor to sway him.

Agreed - whether he already had one or not, one for the dangerous play and another for the booting it away = justified red.

Haaland wasn't booked for his barge on Saliba so it wouldn't make sense for Trossard to be booked for a lesser offence.

Taylors yellow card wasn't back in time from major surgery i'd imagine

It's a damn sight better standard than many countries. The only downside of FT refs and VAR is that people are now expecting perfection. Ref can only do his job with an interpretation of the rules of the game and within the context of the match.

Communication? He pulled the two captains in for a chat FFS! That rarely happens and when the chat isn't heeded someone was gonna suffer and Trossard was the useful idiot.

EPL should copy MLS who this season introduced rules to help counter the ruination of the 2H yesterday namely anyone going down 'injured' gets offered the trainer but has to sit out 2 minutes if he's needed unless the opposition player causing the injury was booked. Alternatively, he can be subbed without penalty. If he doesn't want the trainer then it is play on and they soon recover. At subs a player has 10s to leave the field else the player coming on has top wait an extra 60s before getting on.

I’ve just rewatched the highlights, did Haaland seriously get away with shoving 2 players at the end of the game?

While I agree Oliver is not a particularly good ref (Buffon had this right many years ago), he's not one of the worst. He's just average. But for some reason the media or ref association want him as their new clattenburg/Webb.

Tierney on the other hand is a bit of a joke as a ref. Really wanted to like him but every game I watch him in he makes at least one controversial/daft call. Another average ref.

Oliver lacks consistency, which is my biggest frustration with any official.

I don't mind that refs have their own style of officiating, but I'm yet to see a game he hasn't contradicted himself.

Man City strongly deny anything they don’t want to be accused of, and the political power they currently or previously have/had must intimidate the refs, therefore what you saw Haaland do, didn’t actually really happen, unless you are willing to run the risk of saying it did, which you should seek legal advice for

Was it Oliver who sent Dalot off at Anfield last year?

Thought that was a ridiculous bit of refereeing tbh - driven purely because his ego was hurt a bit. Always thought he has a touch of Mike Dean about him, making decisions based off emotion.

Pretty sure it was, it's a reaction you see very often and it usually results in a yellow. A red was ridiculous to be honest.

Didn't see that.

I did see him take out Saliba and also throw a ball at Gabriels head in celebration of their second goal.

Should've been off really. What's the point in VAR exactly if it doesn't see things like the Gabriel incident?

It did and they didn’t deem it a red card offence.

So players can throw the ball at opposition players for a the craic?

Gotcha.

Just make sure the ref isn't looking. We've seen players banned retrospectively to set precedence for less in the past.
