I watched 7S many years ago and was impressed at the time. Ought to rewatch it. By the way, that might be Kurosawa's most famous film, but he has an exceptional body of work and it's worth checking out more of it. Rashomon is great. And as a Russian literature buff, I really like his adaptation of Dostoevsky's The Idiot, which somehow captures the strange psychology of the original despite transposing the eschatological Christian themes and St Petersburg setting to snowy Hokkaido.

As for gaps in my film knowledge, there are loads. A younger me was eager to close as many gaps as possible, whereas these days I tend to care a bit less about seeing the movies you're supposed to revere and a bit more about whether I think I'll enjoy them.

The Mrs. and I watched 'To Kill a Mockingbird' last year in the Ohio Theatre, which was made as an experience as if we were watching it 50 years ago.

What about Japanese (given that Japan isn't on a continent)?

Most Kurosawa’s movies are worth watching (more than once) his adaptations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth (Throne of Blood) and King Lear (Ran, meaning Chaos) are absolute masterpieces.

Its on my list, i find old movies dialogue unwatchable at times, but since its japanese maybe that wont be a issue

If anyone wants to check out some more classic Japanese film, I recommend the director Yasujiro Ozu, who could hardly be more different from Kurosawa: more domestic, introspective, beautifully framed shots. Check out the trilogy of films Late Spring, Early Summer and (especially) Tokyo Story.

I recommend Kaneto Shindō's Onibaba and especially The Naked Island.
For Kurosawa I like High and Low.

Still working though Kurosawa but Yojimbo is fantastic too, it has a climactic ending that reminds me of Unforgiven

On the topic of Japanese films, might be worth having a look at Wim Wender's 'Perfect Days'. Lovely film but people I've recommended it to either love it or hate it

Perfect Days has a nice feel to it, and an ideal central performance, but the assistant guy is so badly cast it makes a farce out of the movie for me.

Hmmm you mean the young guy with the girlfriend? He has an annoying role for sure but I don't remember him being that jarring
