Sky report huge losses

Should we buy them out? They tried to buy us back in the early 90s and even though the deal didn't go through, they have been instrumental in making us the biggest club in the world. United and Sky built the PL. We built the biggest league in the world together.

Now let's buy Sky and use it like Musk uses Twitter, for his own interests.

I would start with banning Liverpool matches from TV.

Second would be pundits would only be ex Man U players who are also Man U fans.

Turn SSN into MUFC News. Let's face it, 90% of people tune into it to see the latest on Man U anyway.

We could manipulate coverage in all aspects to benefit us and take down the likes of Liverpool.

We are no longer dominant on the pitch, but we could dominate the media and manipulate it in our favour and over time we shall see this result in dominance on the pitch once again.

We could make it all back in satellite dish sales

In many ways it is surprising Sky has lasted this long. Overpriced, ever declining quality of non-sporting content, cheaper alternatives with Netflix, Amazon etc, and, of course, the ever growing IPTV industry.

But, at the same time, the likes of Netflix and Apple haven't gone hard for PL football, with Amazon just taking a small slice and not trying to takeover. It suggests the package isn't worth it for them, and that is the one thing Sky still have going for them. Without the sport content I am sure they would lose a large chunk of subscribers.

I'm trying to work out why the Qatar world cup is being blamed?

Sky's European operations may have covered the World Cup in mainland Europe, which added to its overall costs.

Sky initially thrived by monopolising sports, particularly Premier League football, benefiting both the company and the league. If Sky were to struggle, it could threaten the Premier League's financial stability, leading to serious problems like those seen with ITV Digital in 2002, which negatively impacted many football league clubs.

In the event of Sky's downfall, the Premier League might consider launching its own digital platform to go independent.

Really? I’ll give you £6.7 billion reasons why Sky is essential for the Premier League. That’s the amount generated from broadcasting deals, which provide crucial funding for many clubs. For a lot of them, this revenue is the difference between survival and going under.

PL fan just said he couldn't care about Sky going bust, the Sky that made and continues to make the PL along with United? PL clubs needed and need Sky and United.

Without Sky and United, the PL would be Newcastle and Leeds with players like Kevin Nolan as the star men.

Building on Barry's contribution, collective bargaining in football was brought in to ensure that all clubs, not just the biggest ones like Man Utd, could benefit fairly from TV deals. Before this system, wealthier clubs could have negotiated their own deals, raking in much more money than smaller teams, making the financial gap even bigger. With collective bargaining, the league negotiates all broadcast rights together and shares the revenue among the clubs. While the bigger clubs still get a larger share due to their popularity and performance, the system ensures that smaller clubs can remain competitive.

The Sky deal has been a game changer for the league. Without it, the top clubs might survive on their own due to their massive fan bases, but it would seriously hurt the smaller clubs. Many would struggle financially, and the league could collapse, losing the competitive edge that fans love. The deal has kept most clubs financially stable, ensuring the league stays exciting for everyone.

The likelihood is another broadcaster would step into the breach if Sky pulled out/went bust. Might not be as much money slushing around in the PL, but that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Maybe Ineos could take over Sky and start streamlining the staff? Getting rid of their overpaid pundits would be a start.

The premier league should launch their own platform. I think they could get 1 billion people to pay £9.99/mth for access to all games. Fill in the rest of the time with pre and post-game, documentaries etc.

Tell that to the clubs hanging by a thread due to shrinking revenue streams. If we accept your point, there's a strong case that Premier League teams have become overly reliant on TV deals increasing every negotiation. This dependence has led to reckless spending on transfers and inflated wages, with many clubs gambling on TV money continuing to rise to cover their costs.

It might take a real shake-up for clubs to rethink their approach and start managing their finances more responsibly. They may need to be forced to operate within their means. If the TV revenue bubble bursts, a lot of clubs could find themselves in serious trouble!

I think a subscription model could work, at least for some clubs. Take Utd, for example, despite recent struggles on the pitch, they still have a long waiting list for season tickets and a growing global fan base. A model where fans could subscribe and watch every game live digitally might not hurt OT’s attendance, given the demand. However, smaller clubs might not be so fortunate, as this kind of model could pull fans away from stadiums and reduce matchday revenue.

Introducing a subscription model would likely end collective bargaining. It would allow the richest clubs to negotiate their own TV rights, making them even wealthier and widening the financial gap even further between the top clubs and the rest. The impact on the competitive balance of the league could be significant.

Sky used to be a client of mine. Their business model is facked.

If and when Google enter the streaming auction for PL rights, they have a major issue.

HBO entering the UK market could deal a big blow to Sky, as Sky doesn’t produce enough high-quality content to keep subscribers hooked on its TV deals. I recently tried a 6-month deal with NOW TV, and the selection felt pretty thin, with much of the content relying heavily on HBO-produced shows. It seems like Sky is barely holding on, with football rights being its main lifeline to keep subscribers engaged.

As many have pointed out, major TV networks don’t value the Premier League quite the same way Sky does. If they did, Sky’s dominance would’ve been seriously challenged by now. Sky has only lost ground due to competition laws, which forced them to share some of their Premier League coverage with smaller players. Without these regulations, Sky’s grip on football broadcasting might still be unshaken. But it's a dangerous bubble that will inevitably burst with dire consequences for football clubs.

It's beyond me how any business can lose that and survive. Seven hundred and fifty million pounds, good grief it's unimaginable.
