One game won’t cement his place in the team. He’s lacking confidence and clarity in his role, which affects the way he plays and the impact we expect him to have on the game. My expectations are likely inflated by YouTube highlight reels and glowing testimonials I’ve read. He still has a long way to go before becoming indispensable and the first name on the team sheet.

This isn’t me giving up on him, far from it. I just expect more!

He should have started against Porto. He might not be up to speed with PL football, but this is European football.

Kind of mad that Casemiro and Eriksen are still starting in midfield.

The reaction on here will be something to behold when Fred and Amrabat stomp him into oblivion.

I’ll probably be leading the knee-jerk charge to be fair…

He’s looked worse than Fred, who could press the ball, win it back and at least had some level of ability with the ball.

Let’s see what we think come the end of the season, but he looks lost.

I cannot believe people have dismissed Ugarte. I remember something similar with Amrabat and him adding to us winning the title that kept ETH

I don’t think anyone is dismissing him but he looks a little erratic so far.

Amrabat was probably never good enough but I do think he could have played more last season.

just don't think he helps United's goal-shy attack.

He wasn’t bought to do that.

When Fred first arrived, he couldn't do anything.

Indeed...so after 7 goals in 8 games and less than 60 goals in each of ETHs season, I think having a pure DM sitting in your midfield will help you little.

If he was a more of an all rounder, a box to box man, someone powerful and rangy like Everton's Onana for example, or a deep sitter who is also capable of breaking lines with ball carry or passing through the lines (a Rice type), then he might add something, but that is not what I have seen from him with the limited time i've watched him over the last few seasons.

I saw him chasing shadows vs Spurs and his inability to close space was as much down to Utds set up and the effectiveness of their press as it was to do with Urgate's ability. For me United's off the ball work is one of the worst in the league, and certainly of the top 8. Until you improve this aspect of your game I don't think having a DM protecting the back 4 is going to make much difference to you at either end of the pitch.

What may have more of an impact is Yoro. No idea how good he is but no one in you back line has any pace, and this contributes to your inability to press and United fear of leaving space behind their pedestrian back line. A higher line, compressing space, will allow for a more effective press and may be in these circumstances Urgate's skills will come to the fore.

The way I see it is that if a team tends to defend more with a mid/low block and retreat when out of possession then the need to have an aggressive ball winner is less, as the defending is achieved through weight of numbers. For those teams, the need to spring from this defensive position then demands ball players, so again not playing to a specialist ball winner's strengths.

Conversely, if a team plays with a high press then the ball winner needs to be able to read the game and position themselves well, play with energy and aggression and when they win it back, in the opposition half usually, they have men about them and ahead of them to easily find with a simple pass.

Some like Rodri and Rice can pretty much do it all, so they are a rare find and usually players are slightly better at one aspect than the other. The way Utd have played under ETH, I would have wanted to see more of an Onana type than Urgate because of the way you play and defend.
