I find the new format very unfair on the big teams. It is much harder to qualify now. We are currently undefeated yet that is not enough for automatic qualification and have to rely on the play offs where anything can happen. They need to make it so fewer teams go out in the group cos even we are at risk despite being undefeated.

These league tables mean nothing in reality. All the matches are just a money making exercise. United will probably sneak through on about 8 points, then go on to win the competition.
As of last night we are the highest scorers in the Europa league/UEFA cup of all time with 321 goals, 1 ahead of Sporting.
As for this group stage - so important for us to finish top 8, avoid the first knockout and get second leg home advantage in the last 16 plus get a lower ranked opponent. The better sides should be making the quarters of this comp with little fuss - it’s structured to essentially facilitate that now.
That Quarter final would then be in April - at which point we know where are league season sits and could potentially start prioritising.
I’ve been very pleased that we have taken the group stage seriously so far, great blend of youth and first team players to get us through the first 3 ties. I think we’ll get done at Galatasaray but I think we can pick up 10 points from the last 4 games and finish with 19 overall which will be enough

They did Monte Carlo simulation on this new phase - 10 is guaranteed qualification and 9 was roughly a 97% chance - we’re as good as through now.
16 is almost certainly enough for a top 8 finish, again I think it was around the 97% mark.
We play Elfsborg during their off period, slap bang in the middle of it in fact, that should be a comfortable 3 points. That would leave us needing 4 points from Roma at home and Galatasaray, Rangers and Hoffenheim away. I fancy us to beat Roma and reckon we will scrape a point at a hostile Ibrox. Might get a point in Germany as well. I suspect Gala will beat us.

Spurs need to go full strength as soon as they reach the knockout round, otherwise they will have no chance of reaching the semis. OK to mess around in this ridiculously long group stage, but mess around in the knockout, and they won't last long.
Need to treat this as if they were playing in the CL, same as in the other cup competitions. That way they may actually have a chance of winning a trophy.
Need to go full strength at home to City in the Carabou as well. Make nine changes against them, and the game will be over before halftime.

Agreed and this is what I will heavily judge Ange on this season. So far he has got the the strength right for the group stage and I am delighted - can he step it up again in the KO’s - I.e no Werner, Davies, Dragusin, Forster, we need the first team

I would say there is scope to make a few changes, subject to the opposition.
Of course Werner is 3rd choice LW so we can still rest Son without having Timo play.
Dragusin is also a decent CB option and Richy.a quality FWD option. So small tweaks are possible without weakening us badly.
Think City will rotate quite a few. And we have to play some of the back up like Spence Dragusin otherwise they just won't get any game time unless injuries demand it. We just don't need to go to Daviea or Timo, unless a game is won.

If we’re in the semi then I can’t see us not going strong. The structure of this is hugely beneficial for us if we can get a top 8 finish. I expect us to make the quarters and then see how we go from there - as long as we don’t rotate ourselves out I will be fairly happy

Well I think it did, more or less!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They did Monte Carlo simulation on this new phase - 10 is guaranteed qualification and 9 was roughly a 97% chance - we’re as good as through now.

I think we’ll get done at Galatasaray but I think we can pick up 10 points from the last 4 games and finish with 19 overall which will be enough

the extra ko stage is weeks of 13 & 20 Feb
the first ko stage proper is 6 & 13 March
the QFs 10 & 17 April
SFs, 1 & 8 May
Final 21 May in Bilbao.
Our PL games either side are:
KO round: Man City (h) Bournemouth(h) Fulham (a)
QF: Saints(h) Wolves(a) Forest(h)
SF: Liverpool(a) West Ham (a) Palace(h)

Tottenham doing the PL proud but I thought we had two teams in the comp.
