This is the thing I can't get my head around. The politics parts are often subjective, open to different interpretations, driven by loyalty etc. But can people just not see that he's a pretty awful human, a narcissist, a sore loser, and that he struggles to follow a chain of thought even to the end of a sentence? Or do they just not care?

I've seen a few tweets today along the lines of: "He's everything we teach kids not to be. Yet it didn't matter."

Kind of sums it up.

The leaders are almost always a reflection of the people they represent and like it or not he is what America wants so as outsiders especially you need to stop morning and respect the democratic will of the people.

They have spoken!

The double standard of scoring by voters between Trump and Harris/Biden is what gets me. No one is saying they don't have their issues, but compared to Trump....

I don't know if it's always been this way but I think a lot of it comes down to is there's a lot of people out there who don't just want a candidate to share their beliefs, they want one who actively p!sses the other side off.

It's not about making their own lives better, it's making others' worse.

Some people just want to see the World burn and good and not so good people suffer.

Don't forget his sexual abuse charge, upheld by a court.

It's quite amazing... But they get what they voted for, good luck to them. Hopefully he keeps most of his madness within the states.

Social media is fuelling a lot of this. People have been us vs them for ages but with online and SM algorithms it’s exploding in front of our eyes

Some of his policies are actually admirable. Protecting American Steel workers by imposing huge taxes on cheap imports for example is something you'd want your president to do.

It's just the stuff that comes with him though as to why I could never get on board. Racism, lies / fear spreading / misinformation.

The Democrats have been too hung up on things like gender and such nonsense. The left have gone too far and the rest of the country have said no more basically.

Trump knows what America is. He understands the people and just how simple they are and he plays that card tremendously even though I can't stand the bloke.

I did see an interesting point that Covid has likely been a big factor in this. For months there was little to do but be online, you get suckered in and then the echo chambers happen.

I think that's been the case with Gen Z especially.

Surely questions need to be asked of the Justice Department when the blatant get out of jail card has literally been in plain view since 2020. The interminable faffing around and toleration of trivial procedural delays is staggering. Although all that being said it's a fair bet that any semblance of a Justice System will probably cease to exist in the coming years.

Donald Trump started his election campaign 2 years ago and had planned it since the day he lost out to Biden. Harris meanwhile had a 3 month campaign - clearly her mandate was not tested in the same way Trumps was, and with Trump, you kind of know what you are getting.

The Democrats, kept a clearly less than 100% mentally competent man in charge right up to the point where they could not hide his frailty any longer. Why were they not preparing sooner?

Wanting to "own the Libs" does appear to be a thing. And the modern US definition of Communism or Marxism is apparently: "When people I deem inferior to myself are being treated as though they were my equal." Or "when I might have slightly less of something so that someone else can have slightly more of it."

How is Trump deemed 100% mentally competent by comparison?

Trump has his faculties, it doesn’t always seem like it, be he is all there.

Biden - faaaack knows who was pulling his strings the last 2 years, he could barely talk at times

It was a very obvious outcome, what we are witnessing is how the absolutely pathetic, weak, feckless, chinless centrism.

Obama > Trump
Macron > LePen

It's happening all over Europe Geert Wilders in Holland, the rise of the AFD in Germany, Melloni in Italy

The UK was mildly insulated from this effect (brexit aside) as we had a lunatic right wing government from 2010 onwards, Starmer will now entrench the pain by "making tough decisions" and in a few years we'll be mover from Starmer > Badenoch/Farage

The chinless centrists those who consider themselves "the grown ups in the room" when in reality they are the spoiled brats who demand everyone support them as they believe they are correct, this cohort will f**k us all

He, wrongly, accused immigrants of eating cats and dogs.

But he's got all his faculties apparently.

There are definitely people around him who know what they're doing, but I reckon Trump is genuinely as stupid as he comes across.

For whatever reason though he inspires a cult-following following in stupid people, and it makes him an extremely useful idiot for smarter people looking for power and influence (Musk and the like).

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Republicans have fairly successfully framed the Democrats in this way, but the bulk of Harris's campaign has been all about economic policies that support working and middle class people, and making their material lives better. The crux of Trump's campaign has been that deporting tens of millions of undocumented migrants while putting huge tariffs on imports will solve everyone's problems. Polling consistently indicates that high inflation rates under Biden and the border security issue (which actually hasn't changed a great deal under Biden vs Trump) were the two predominant issues that motivated people to vote for Trump.

Sure, the Democrats aren't in favour of demonizing minority groups (though activists who advocate for minorities are consistently disappointed by how much support they get from mainstream national Democrat politicians).
