We had all these nonsense with Qatar and they hosted a good tournament. A world cup in Saudi Arabia will be fine. The reflexive cynicism of you Brits anytime a country outside your Western or Commonwealth bubble host something is tedious and exhausting.

It should be Australia (and NZ). We’ve never had a men’s one on this continent, we’re arguably the most sports mad nation on the planet, we have tonnes of world class already built stadium and we hosted the best women’s World Cup of all time last year

Saudi really don’t deserve it for many reasons but on just a pure rotation level border a country who hosted a men’s one just a couple of years ago

Australia made no bid, so I'm not sure the point of saying "it should be Australia".

No country did because they knew how corrupt the process is and Saudi were always going to have it.

The fact that a country like Israel doesn't appear on this list should tell you something.

This list is according to some Western standards, where they don't categorise invading country after country and killing millions and millions of people and putting many more millions in acute human suffering as a contravention of human rights.

They call the invasions and genocides "defending democracy" or "Israel has a right to defend itself."

Colonialism and modern colonialism are the worst human rights but people in t

They don't take the high horse and are at least aware of forces controlling them. In the West people think they are in charge of their own thoughts but when Saudi wins a bid to host the world cup, you can see from the reactions that hardly anyone thinks for themselves.

false news!

The Wahabbi interpretation of Sharia law in Saudi Arabia maintains that acts of homosexuality should be disciplined in the same way as adultery - with death by stoning.

Homosexuality or nonconformant gender expression can also be punished by corporal punishment, flogging, imprisonment or forced 'conversion' therapy.

In January 2022, three men were decapitated in Saudi Arabia after being convicted of 'sodomy, same-sex marriage and incitement to paedophilia,' as per the Saudi Ministry of Interior.

In 2019, the Saudi Arabian government orchestrated a mass-execution of 37 men who were accused of espionage or terrorism, five of whom were also convicted of same-sex interc0urse after one was tortured into confessing.

Human rights across the western world are far from perfect but Saudi and other countries in the region abuse the most basic of human rights, especially for women

The Samuel Martin piece in The Times gives a very decent amount of context. He is on his own high horse so you may not necessarily agree with his opinion/interpretation but the context is interesting and the absolute farce of the glamorous announcement is ridiculous.

FIFA share the same attitude as many of these wealthy oils states. They are all powerful, they can make their own rules and they are confident to do it in plain sight as they are experts in hiding what is actually happening. You just have to look at how teh owners of F1 is acting. He has gone beyond his powers to step into certain situations in F1, and the criticism of it from bodies within the sport has seen the F1 owners look to change the rules so the president can do what he wants, without criticism or investigation. That's a very simplistic summary of it but these all powerful autocratic leaders basically want to do what they want and play by their rules. We've seen it with City trying to change the PL rules in their favour and away from the wider good of the game.

But lets face it Sir Keir has just got back from his begging bowl tour of Saudi and Boris was the same before him.

Firstly, your numbers are false.

Secondly, whatever the US or UK or European stance on the Israel / Gaza conflict is, they are not the ones perpetrating genocide and committing mass human rights violations and war crimes. Your conflating of the issues is also false.

I don't see anyone denying this. All I see is it being used as whataboutery to distract from even worse human rights offenders.
