Oscar Winning Movies

I prefer Chariots Of Fire over Rainman, although the latter is still a good film.
Probably go for Forrest Gump in the 90's
2000's? Possibly The Departed

80s was a hard one, not that many true classics, but also not many terrible ones either. Gandhi, Amadeus and Platoon were arguably better movies than Rain Man too, but I just preferred it.

2000s, I loved Gladiator, Departed and Slumdog, but again just preferred Beautiful Mind over it.

90s had some top ones like Silence of the Lambs, Schindlers List, Forrest Gump, American Beauty, but some of my favourites never won the Oscars like Goodfellas, Boyz N the Hood, Shawshank, Usual Suspects, Lock Stock, Ssving Pricete Ryan etc.

Goodfellas and Shawshank are in my all time top 5. I think I read somewhere that Shawshank, Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and The Lion King were all in the cinema at the same time, or pretty close. Plus you had Leon that year.
I'd pick Oppenheimer for this decade. Not a great one imo but better than the rest.

Yes a great year, also loved Clerks too.

As for Oppenheimer, a very well made film. But like a number of Oscar winners based on true stories, probably better to see a documentary about it (as the movie dragged a bit IMO). I feel the same about "12 Years a Slave", "Spotlight" and a few others.

Is bird man any good?

I personally don’t believe it is.

However, considering I have put it as the best Oscar winning movies of the 2010s just shows how low the bar is for that decade.

A lot of the other movies were either awful or seem to be made simply for Oscars. I suppose Spotlight and 12 Years a Slave might’ve been slightly better, but again seemed to provoke emotions due to the subject matter rather than the actual movie.

My favourites watching them at the time rather than retrospectively.

1980's
Best - Platoon

1990's
Best - Silence of the Lambs
Worst - Shakespeare in Love

2000's
Best - The Departed
Worst - Chicago

2010's
Best - Green Book
Worst - The Shape of Water

I think I could name better films in every decade which goes to show Best Picture oscars aren't always the best of the best. Then again it's all subjective.

Hated shape of water. Platoon is awsome

Shape of Water imo was like the emperor's new clothes. Too many said it was a great film because a few critics said so, and nobody had the courage to say, no it's a load of boring, formulaic pretentious 5hite.

I tend to ignore the more pretentious critics, like the guardian. Having seen their list of best movies ever, they clearly no nothing. The creature piiiisssed me off in that movie, I’d have turned it in to sushi

Very few of the greatest movies have won Best Picture.

Probably most have been ineligible.

The best to have won imo are:

1943 Casablanca
1954 On the Waterfront
1957 The Bridge on the River Kwai
1962 Lawrence of Arabia
1965 The Sound of Music
1972 The Godfather
1974 The Godfather Part 2
2007 No Country for Old Men

all in or around my top 100

I agree, however in the early to mid 1970s I wasn't born then but it seems they got it right most years.

French Connection (1971), The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part 2 (1974), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Rocky (1976) were very good choices and those movies are still remembered today as classics. Even The Sting (1973) is remembered even though I thought it was a bit overrated.

Yeah agreed. Silence of the lambs is a brilliant movie, a thriller that feels like a horror

Is it wrong I was toying with the idea of choosing The English Patient instead?

It's a great story and beautifully made

posted 5 days, 9 hours ago

lol very wrong,

I have English Patient as my 2nd worst of the 90s. Well made, but not nearly as memorable as the winners of the 90s. Just my opinion though.

posted 5 days, 8 hours ago

The worst best picture winner will forever be Crash, especially when you look at the films it beat that year.

posted 5 days, 7 hours ago

I don’t necessarily agree with that, Crash was a pretty underrated film. Maybe, not Oscar winning but nice to see a film about racism that doesn’t only focus on 2 races like all the others.

I also wasn’t watching that many movies in the mid 2000s and don’t remember that many great movies it beat. Could be wrong though.

There have been worse in my opinion. Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan was a horrendous decision.

Some movies like Tom Jones in the 60s are an absolute joke and should never have won an Oscar.

Recent movies like Argo, Moonlight, Shape of Water, Nomadland I have found it hard to stay awake during these movies.

Anyway, it’s all subjective anyway.
