What about you?

Thank you for that RR

With regards to your comment, it a bit like asking who is the greatest cricketer and arguing that it should be a fielder because of the number of runs he has stopped. my view would be that the greatest player of the game, needs to be the one who can play the game the best, not the one who is best at stopping others from playing.

No defender can realistically compared to a maradonna or a cruyff, or even a gascoine imo.

Hi Ramsey

that is a very well thought out and well reasoned argument. well done.

do you not think 'who is the best all around player' so it could be a amazing world class defender who is very good attacking or with the ball at his feet. defenders can be like that.

but i couldnt see a messi, who is amazing attacking wise, being able to defend at all.

The best player in the world wins games, goals win games. Thus the best player in the world is probably the one who creates most goals.

you could score 100 goals. but if you cannot defend. you will concede 101.

IMO defending is the hardest job in football, and a defender could be a decent attacker, but i could never see messi being a decent defender.

Yes, but at the end of the day. If a defender is amazing your team will get a lot of clean sheets, but if the attackers are poor its a lot of 0-0 draws, which doesnt get you those magic three points.

1 points > 0 points.

imo the best ever player has to be a midfielder, someone that can defend very and score 'i know my argument has been about defenders but yeah ' and that is why zidane is imo, the best ever.

Has to be a midfielder with a goal scoring record that is very high.

my best skill at rugby was reading the game. i really could read the game exceptionally well. the welsh flanker dan lydiate can do the same (im not trying to compare myself to him !). its why he can make so many tackles. it basically means he can be in the game much more than other players without travelling so far.

it is this reading of the game which is probably the greatest skill of the top defenders. but you dont do it with the ball at your feet. i think to ask who is the greatest player, you cant answer it with a player who is at his best when he doent have the ball. my argument would therefore be that the greatest footballer - perhaps unlike the greratest rugby player - has to be the one who has the greatest gift with the ball at his feet.

obviously Gary Doherty is the best player ever, he could play anywhere, Zidane had loads of anonymous games that people forget
