We’ll be moving next year cause we have a dog now and the neighbours always leave the gates connecting to the gardens open and their doors opened too

Sounds proper Luton that. Don’t have a stadium backing on to you?

So if you're looking at it on plan:
-there's a row of houses
-at the rear of the houses is lawn area
-the lawn area is subdivided by fences, with a fence at the boundary of each plot
-each fence has a gate in it

I think this is wrong, but it will hopefully give you a suitable template to properly explain this arrangement.

Yeah, I can't understand why a man of his stature and means is living in such a manner.

so the issue is that you have a garden, but it has a communal footpath running across it.

so if you're sunbathing anyone can just walk past.

and if you let the dog out it can run up to random people (and potentially other dogs) walking through, or - if they leave the gates open - run next door?

is there any kind of etiquette/unwritten rule about acknowledging one another whilst walking through each others' gardens? do people tend to say hello, or nod, or not even look at each other, or does it vary?

Neighbour talks too much and is always walking out the side to their cars and not giving a fack, I’ve said about the gate but they’re old and don’t care, so I throw the rotten apples that fall in our garden into theirs

why couldn't they put the path along the back, and segregate it off with a fence parallel with the back wall of the houses? i.e. a normal arrangement (aka an alley).

what fkwit has come up with this for a layout in an "expensive area"?

never went there.
i live in a side room in an old peoples' house.
i go out for a daily walk, and a weekly shop where I spend about £45 on groceries. the rest of the time i'm just sat here looking at the internet.
i sleep on 2 sofa cushions on the floor (which incidentally started to feel cold last night already, not boding well for the winter).

note to self: see if there's another blanket somewhere.
