"Anti-discrimination charity Kick it Out says it has received a "significant number" of complaints about a racial slur Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur used about team-mate Son Heung-min."
I'm guessing those aren't Korean people complaining.
Probably Arsenal fans!

Appearing on Uruguayan TV, Bentancur was asked by a presenter for a Tottenham shirt, before replying: "Sonny's? It could be Sonny's cousin too as they all look the same."
That's different wording than in the article posted earlier. If that's what happened, then I'd agree he was a dumbass for saying it.
I think this is a phrase we are particularly sensitive to in the UK because it was used (probably in an offensive way at times in fairness) about or towards people from minority groups living in the UK at a time when many people in the UK were racist.
That's understandable when it comes to say a white person in the UK saying it to a black person in the UK. I can understand why that could seem offensive.
But this incident doesn't have that context. So we are importing offence into it artificially aren't we?

It's the same with that Tory MP who was convicted of racism a couple of years ago. That was completely mental.
As I recall he used to live in Bahrain and had been involved in business or politics there. Now back in the UK, someone travelled from Bahrain to come and say unpleasant things to him (I can't remember the details).
So he's walking down the street, when this Bahraini guy starts harassing him. Eventually he tells the bloke to "go back home to Bahrain".
He was convicted of racism and lost his career.
Wtf?????????????????
It's not the same thing AT ALL as the racist use this phrase used to be used. It's a complete nonsense for him to be held to be racist for this comment in this context.

Slow day here so I just read Robert Stewart's appeal. They're not even saying he wasn't racist. The MP admits that he probably wouldn't have said 'Go back to Bahrain' in hindsight and that (the bit you left out) 'You're taking money off my country. Go away' was racist. They're arguing that Mr Al Wadaei wasn't sufficiently offended enough at the time to warrant a charge of 'harassment, alarm, or distress'.
Basically a technicality rather than a ruling on racism. Which I grant you, is kinda your point. But also underlines why you shouldn't just go around saying things that are racist assuming that everyone knows you don't actually mean it. Just don't be a caant in the first place
Also, a cursory glance of a newspaper article about the case reveals that Mr Al Wadaei had been arrested and tortured in Bahrain and had resided in the UK for years, taking up an advocacy role and (understandably) protesting the UK government's relationship with Bahrain. They'd met once before, in England, and there's nothing to say Mr Stewart knew who he was or where he came from.

Which, by the way, is actually to Mr Stewart's credit. Cos if he knew about Mr Al Wadaei it's a facking awful thing to say.
