I don't agree with you, I think Marcelo has more to his game than Alves

Alves of course.

Alves, he might just be a little bit better than Carl Jenkinson but would have to make do with a place on the bench when Sanga is fit!.

Alves has better, shot, set-piece, more energy and pace. Marcelo probably better with passing but both defensively suspect when tested one on one.

@powerking, You would bench Alves for Sagna?

For all the talk of Alves been weak defensively I have yet to see it in a real game scenario, I think people assume because hes Brazilian and attacking he can't defend which is certainly not the case particularly when defending one on one situations.

When he plays for barca all the players close down opposition very quickly so you will rarely see alves against another player in 1v1 situation. Plus he is always in an advanced position.

Only time i have seen Alves really tested defensively was at SB and Malouda had the complete beating of him.

Alves is great for Barca but pretty poor for Brazil where quite a few players get the better of him.

Marcelo is just a rubbish version of Alves.

You guys are hugely underrating Marcelo. He's keeping Coentrao out of the left back role at Madrid and he's come on in leaps and bounds since Mourinho arrived.IMO the best left back in the world. He's also got a good understanding with Cristiano Ronaldo down that flank and has become a leader in the team. Alves is quality too but suspect in one v one situations. Di Maria, Callejon, and a few other skillful wingers exposed him last season. Even Cristiano in the Super Cup this season.

I don't know why Real bought Coentrao.

can't stand marcelo something about his face which i strongly dislike but alves is one of the reasons why barca is so good he can run the right side on his own which can push pedro in the centre which leads to an extra man, his stamina is unreal

Alves scores or assists 25+ goals a season. No right back comes close to him.

Alves is quality when attacking and his tackling is normally pretty good but when playing he does tend to get caught out of position high up the pitch at times. Whether this is because for Barcelona the defensive load is shared fairly equally around the team. When playing for Brazil this could be a difficult adjustment for him.

At the beginning of his career it seemed that Marcelo was someone who, if born in Europe, would have been raised and nurtured as a winger; probably a good one as well. However because Brazil had an abundance of skillful attacking players he was converted to fullback; a position that I think he had trouble adapting do when he first moved to Madrid. He has come on leaps and bounds however.

Maicon is still better than both. Alves is okay for us because he is ised as a secondary winger, he never defends and I think I've only ever seen him play defensively well once.

maicon is dump mate, gareth bale showed that last year

Madrid bought contrao because he is versatile can play lb,lw,rb and rw. I wouldn't have minded him at Chelsea at all,any1 but pereira.
Back to topic Alves and Marcelo are both suspect defensively but brilliant going forward but i feel Alves offers more and is better on the ball.

Lahm best fullback in the world by far though.
