If he was so good why can he not pick out defence splitting passess ???
His passing ability has never been in question; even in his West Ham days it was evident that he was a very accomplished player.
But doing against one-time Romanian champions is very different from playing Barcelona who close you down like rabid dogs.

Thewalkingdude you're right, which is why I said I'd like to see him play like this against city. Hes notoriously berated for his side passes that people forget his ability so I hope he can kick on from here!
And yes as a whole we are not majorly exciting but it's a comfortable game that were controlling. A goal is sure to come
I really do think it could be a confidence issue with Carrick. He's never struck me in interviews as a person who's particularly self-confident.
If he had more self-assurance then I think he could be up there with the best central midfielders. He has a terrific shot on him (just look at the 7-1 Roma match for evidence!) and his passing is undoubtedly excellent.

It takes 2 to pass. One to pass (duh!) and one to find some space.
Carrick also needs plenty of room, and time for his docile legs to turn from his sidewards stance, look towards an attacking position, shield his eyes from an unfamiliar sight, pick out a player making a run, mentally say 'nuts to THAT!', turn back towards his own goal, and pass back to our defence.
Give me a ball, and some guys in acres of space, not been tightly marked, and I kid you not, if your basing top players on this criteria, you'd ask for my autograph.
What a dreadful 45 mins of football, typical of our form in last month.

carrick was exceptional
Completed every pass. Go watch the game again. His pasing was incredibly crisp and accurate the whole game

I completely agree, made some barn storming blocks in defence as well.
All I'm saying is if Carrick is easily your/our stand out player, it say's a lot about the performance by the rest of the team.
And I think my point is backed up, considering we looked very, very average for 87 minuets against a team ranked 151 in Europe.

Fair do's although Carrick playing so well doesn't really explain the performance by some of our other players.
he gets bad press most of he time so no surprise he isnt geting any credit for putting in a passing masterclass
Nah your right, he did play very well this evening, I'm incredibly bias re Carrick.
I though Valencia was very poor, he seem reluctant to take a player on these days, and his crossing is nothing like it was a couple of seasons ago.
Anderson showed a bit of promise, but still gave the ball away, and picked the wrong pass on too many occasions.
Hernandez had another quiet one (what was the point of resting him against Liverpool?), Rooney didn't really do much other than score a couple of penalties, and I was hoping for more from Nani, though he was unlucky not to score.
All in all disappointing, and we'll be in a whole world of trouble if we play like that on Sunday!!
Man city midfield is not as good as man utd as shown every time we play them they sit back while we try to force through there bus. The only difference is Man city as shown in the community shield are more clinical where in the first half they shot twice and scored twice going forward twice that half.
