THEY are fourth in the table, their dressing-room harmony was epitomised by a mass player celebration after extending their unbeaten run to 11 games, their manager is a prime candidate for boss of the month, their centre-back refused to leave the pitch in the name of battle despite a broken nose and they go to Blackburn on a high looking to make it into the last eight of the Carling Cup.
Are we really talking about Newcastle United?
You know, the club which suffered a disastrous pre-season programme in which their star player was injured, the club at which two of their best players using a social networking site to voice their concerns about the turmoil behind the scenes and the problems which would be caused by the lack of investment.
The club which got it all wrong in the transfer window by failing to sign an established striker.
Incredibly we are. After seeing off Wigan, we are talking about a Newcastle United team which is currently looking down on big- spending Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal and a team which has now not tasted defeat since May at Anfield, 14 games ago, in all competitions. It may have been tongue in cheek, but the talk of the Toon on Saturday night was of dusting off passports – even joking about the prospect of European football shows how far the Magpies have gone in a short space of time.
Make no doubt it, Alan Pardew’s players are giving the Toon Army every right to feel positive about their team after a start nobody in their right minds would have predicted last summer.
