sorry, but in my opinion it is impossible to refer to someone's race, while not having a pleasant conversation, and for it not to have racist connotations.

there are many races that we british have never oppressed, but which the slang terms for are still considered racist or xenophobic.

Just because some countries don't deem a word/phrase as offensive doesn't mean those words/phrases can be used in a completely different country. Perhaps the south american nations simply aren't as well enlightened as western european ones.

that's ok, but why are you still arguing about the subject, it will turn nasty and ending up with someone maybe saying something out of turn.

Peace and Love guys

ignorance is no excuse, sorry fred. if he used that word in that situation, i don't personally see how it can be excused as anything other than racist. just my opinion, obviously.

To say that it isn't offensive because there hasn't been the oppression of the black peoples in south america is also just blatantly wrong. I saw a docu on Pele a while back, and the racism he sufferred, even as a national hero was huge.

Are you not pretty much saying that Western culture is superior and therefore South Americans should change their ways to match us?

If so then that is crazily arrogant and ignorant.

no, i'm saying that racism is wrong. full stop, end of story, no matter where it is. referring to someone's race in a derogatory way IS racist. no matter where you are from. it's just some countries aren't as hot on racism as we are.

In my opinion suarez knew that saying that to evra would rile him up even more than he already was, and that makes it racist.

But calling somebody black is not racism.
----------------------------------
it is if you mean to cause offense by it, which given it was a retaliation to "don't touch me south american", i believe was his intention.

this isn't a court of law fred, i can form my own opinion.

I hate evra, have done for a long time. if he said what he is quoted as having said, then in my opinion, he was being racist. equally, the counter-comment by suarez, if accurate is alos, in my opinion racist.

Remember that 30 years ago calling someone 'darkie' wouldn't be considered racist in this country - now it is. I feel on racism that certain countries are several years behind the wetern european nations - seemingly uruguay being one of them.
