Prior??

posted on 26/10/11

prior is an option but if England were going to include him, they would have done in the past 18-24 months. so i dont think that they will go for him now. initially i was also thinking prior but didnt think he would play so decided not to include him in the article.

No need to drop Kiewswetter at all, he's done a good job for England before, he's just had a bad tour, I mean if you were going to drop players after 1 poor series then there would be no Indian players left after their tour of England.

I think Kieswetter's last inings will have saved him for the time being, not so sure about Bopara though.

As far as Kiewswetter's w/k is concerned:- When he's standing back there isn't a problem, he can leap and be athletic with the best of them. The problem seems to be standing up whether its spinners or medium pacers.

He looks untidy when the ball keeps low with too many times not being able to take the ball cleanly.

As far as his batting is concerned:- I think he has to play more his way of 'going for it' clean hitting, hitting over the infield. Whether he feels that now he has played for England almost 30 times he has to play careful and responsible (as he see's it), or perhaps given advice by England coaches they would prefer if he played to build bigger partnerships?

Kiewetter is a poor wicket keeper. If you compare the way he takes the ball, reaching out far to the side of his body, with Prior or Dhoni who take the ball close to their bodies, he looks very much an amateur.

Kieswetter is the most talented batsman in England, and imo the best one day players in the world currently along with MS Dhoni and Jonty Rhodes. He is a great boundary fielder as well which shouldn't be overlooked.

I'm undecided on Kieswetter.
On one hand he has done pretty well in this format and history says we should maybe persevere.
And another part says his keeping isn't great and he looks like the sort of player who may get a few fifties and the odd ton but is that enough?
I don't mind the latter but he has to come out firing, like he did in the last match.

I think Kieswetter is a talented batsman who could be a great asset to the ODI team but he has to learn the difference between opening in T20 and ODI games.
In ODI watchful aggression is my idea of an opening batsman. He has on occasion played this way with success.
He could also be a suitable player in the middle order as that's where we often come up short.
He really must improve his keeping technique if he's to remain in that role.

I'd bat him at seven.

My team:

Cook
KP
Trott
Morgan
Bairstow
Patel
Kieswetter
Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Anderson/Meaker/Dernbach

Ginger, I would hope that Woakes will one day be a regular member of the ODI team. He's probably the best bowler/batsman in England, an exceptional fielder and an improving bowler.

I forgot about Woakes.

Bresnan's place is not in cement, so Woakes could be a good replacement for him or perhaps Patel although Patel bowled ok.

I think Dernbach showed he is far from ready for ODI cricket at this level. His much vaunted variations have flopped. I think T20 is probably his format.
Finn's performances have been impressive and I'll be surprised if he doesn't play against Pakistan.

And I forgot Finn???

Decisions, decisions.

Broad's propensity to injuries is a concern and playing in all formats might be too risky.
Swann was completely out of sorts in this series. His fielding and bowling was poor and his body language indicated this. I wonder if his biography was not as well received in the squad as Andy Flower claimed.

I very much doubt Flower is telling the whole truth with regards to his biography.

As a Pak fan Finn would worry me the most if your talking limited overs game. Pace, bounce and agression he looks a shoe in to be in the England team for a while.

Ginge
Replace Bresnan with Finn in your team and it looks perfect.

Dont think Bairstow is ready.I think the Lions are touring the subcontinent this winter so Jonny could do with a spell with the Lions. If he does well there then I would re introduce him to the ODI team next summer. But dont think he is ready yet.I would give Kies or Buttler a go down the order.Taylor should be in that side. You cant have all hitters. We need nurdlers in the middle overs and Taylor is one of them.
Morgan has apparently said he wants to bat at 5.So Taylor at 4 would be good.Thats his ideal position.

England need to get over there idea of the w/k opening the batting. Just because the great Gilly did it well doesnt mean everyone can.

Boss - Agreed!
