Barker will be captain no doubt.
Shackell will deputise I'm sure.
Nice to have other leaders like Bryson in though isn't it?
Savage was never a leader, he was an over excitable, egotistical clown and at his very, very best an extremely average player in a Derby shirt.............I'm pleased to see NC has recognised the need to put some proper leadership in the dressing room and out on the park.
His experience and leadership qualities were there for all to see.
Past it as a player, didn't like his hair, whatever your gripes are is fine by me but I retort that without him we would have gone down last year.
I thought Savage was a very good leader, was vocal in the dressing room and on the training ground. I will miss him as a Derby player.
Every time Derby lost last season it was Savages fault. If he had scored a Hattrick, marked their star man out of the game and made 3 goal line clearences he might have just scraped in to having an average game in some Derby fans eyes
Bushwacker agreed.
Just seen that Forest want Calderwood as assistant to McClaren after freeloading Billy Davies shadow, David Kelly was sacked last week.
That will have the rest of the league quaking in their boots. .
Nathan Ellington to Ipswich. Bizarre.
He might been vocal, but he was the only one, when these lads gel,it should be a rocking dressing room,im excited,:$
I have no personal issue with Savage he had a a few good games for Derby but far to many average ones, it's the definition of leader that I contest. Would I rank Savage as a 'leader' in the same bracket as Mackay, Gemmill, McFarland, Hindmarsh, Stimac, Van der Lann, to name half a dozen from 20 I can think of easily?...........never in a century of Sundays.
What is a captain's role in football. Its not like cricket where you have to make decisions all day. The captain is merely the voice of the manager on the pitch. Sav being extremely vocal was a good captain. I never thought he was such a bad player as some seem to think.
I think Savage was the only real option Clough had has a captain..........and that's what he was IMO, a captain, but never a leader. I can imagine Savage hacked many players off with his antics at times, did he inspire everyone? I truely doubt it.
Agreed Rambling-Ram, he couldn't be mentioned in the same breath as a Keane, Mackay, Robson but in terms of influence I think he was invaluable.
Derby weren't the first club to name him as captain, I believe he captained Brum, Blackburn and Leicester on certain occasions too.
Moving on, we now have 3 better options and I am quite excited about next season because we have players who can lead by example and by character.
I agree Dan, you can have all the creative flair in world but when the chips are down it's the leaders that stand out and make the difference and I am delighted to see the quality of leadership that NC appears to be bringing in just now.
Utter Tosh
Sav was tool on and off the pitch. Captain my backside. What Captain would say he would like to be considered for a transfer to Vancouver when the team was at an all time low And entering a critical part of the season. Couple that with his very poor performances and ill disciplin on the pitch. And yet you think he's great. Bonkers.
When your told your not going to be offered a new contract at your club then your surplus to requirements. Who wouldnt look for another club?
Iwaslevel - we would have gone down without him.
You don't like him, I don't love him.
To disregard his importance last year is ridiculous in my opinion.
'Sav played a very important role last season'
Sorry, you lost me there.
I don't think I've seen a worse captain at Derby since I've been watching them from 1982. He's not a leader. He's the 1st person to drop their head when we go behind. The younger lads look to him for inspiration and all they see is him running round and round and not reading the game properly. You never saw Oakley running round and round. He raed the game and made sure he got to where the ball was going to go. Paul McGrath was excemptional at that.
The way he behaved when he was taken off was not how a captain should behave.....
I'd be interested to see if anyone could name a worse captain than Sav at Derby.
The worst decision Clough has made so far (and there have been some bad ones) was agreeing to extend Savage's contract another year.
I think the dressing-room at Pride Park will be a more democratic place with a number of captains/stronger personalities in it and the responsibility spread around.
I have no personal beef with Savage, but his personality was probably overwhelming. It remains to be seen how we perform as a team with the influx of players, but I don't think Savage will be missed greatly. In fact, other players might come to the fore. It must do wonders for John Brayford's confidence to know he was our POTY and a boost to him.
Sav will always be a thorny issue. I feel he just about edged it as a plus to the side, but , as has been hinted, he could never be mentioned in the same breath as a McGrath or a Mackay. But, on the final downward curve of the twilight of his career, I think he did enough. Just.
So he just about edged it did he Moj.
If I put myself in your shoes I still can't see where you are coming from. You didn't see him play very often so you may be excused from missing his inept performances. Come on, explain yourself.
