I was looking at a You Tube clip the other day of the Barca fans throwing a Pigs Head at Figo...not something you see every day
Probably not anywhere near as shocking as the Cantona thing though
Can anyone think of anything more shocking to happen on (or just off) the pitch, moments where you couldn't believe what was happening?
===========================
I used to get that feeling every time Darron Gibson came on the field for us. Thank god he's gone.

That's a good call - was definitely a double-take moment. I guess it's not quiet as shocking as the Cantona incident because it was the fans, rather than player, acting.

Zidane headbutt must be up there, when you take into account the occasion.. world cup final and his last ever game
Not strictly a football pitch but Erica Roe at Twickers has to be up there along with Karl Power getting in the United team photo v Munich.
Zidane was definitely incredible to watch unfolding.
Power was funny although I don't remember hearing about it until way after the event. He was a bit of a career prankster:

Classic!
What a pity Eric didn't do it in the kippax,he would have been welcomed lovingly
Zidane is a good call. The most memorable single incident in any WC final I have watched on live TV (including the football action itself).
That reminds me of the German goalkeeper Schumacher taking out a French forward in a one-on-one in the 1982 semi-final. It was not only a cynical professional foul but a vicious assault. Today both of those things qualify for a straight red. Doing both would result in a long ban. In 1982 he completely got away with it and the French were denied what would almost certainly have been a winning goal and a place in the final.

Jeez I remember just staring at the TV gobsmacked at that.
Good shout
Going back a bit but the Bremner v Keegan fight in the Charity Shield when they started fighting again after they had been sent off and chucked their shirts on the floor.
@ We've won it 5 times
That was before my time so when I saw the footage I found it hilarious, rather than shocking. Mind you, I know Keegan had a golden boy reputation so I guess it was a big surprise.
on the other side of it.... the moments when the whole pub has errupted in shocked laughter
the scorpion kick from Columbia's goalkeeper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJI5B1yZ8vU
Crouch's first robot dance.
@ Giggsnsholes
It is hilarious now but as you say with Keegan rep, the fact that Charity Sheilds then were seen as an exhibition game which was often shared and the fact that as they walked off the pitch they started fighting again.
The Cantona thing makes me laugh when I see it now although I was really shocked at the time. How many footballers have felt like doing that to fans.
Is it 17 years ago? Christ. Remember I had a t-shirt with studmarks on it and Eric was 'ere when I was a kid.
Most shocking thing I think I've ever seen was the Italian fans dropping a scooter on the fans below them.

One of the strangest things I ever saw on a football field was a game I was actually playing in
Was many years ago in the Manchester Saturday morning league
We were playing against a team that had two rather overweight tough looking black guys in it
One of then gave this skinny kid in his team a bit of jip for messing up a pass and he responded by calling his own team mate a fat black c
Well, what followed was just unreal. The Black guy picked out the corner flag and set off after the guy that had racially abused him and the other big black guy joined in the chase. Because they were rather large, they were not particularly quick and the skinny guy just ran at a pace to keep a few yards in front of them racially abusingthe pair of them at the same time
We just looked on in utter amazement. They ended up disappearing from view and never came back. The ref red carded all three of em for some reason and they had to finish the game with 8 men.
I still wonder if they ever caught up with him
haha, i hope you won after that
I saw a funny one last week. We had a 5pm kick off as the local team (portimonense) had an under 7s game on the pitch we use.
On of their players get the smallest of taps, about 5 yards outside the box... ran at full pelt into the penalty area and did a classic swan dive. Me and my English mate were cracking up, to my astoundment, the parents that were gathered around were shouting for a penalty. If it were my kid, I would bury my head in shame.

Sigh, and the proffessional players that do it don't realise the damage they are doing. Kids are just copying their heroes eh
Another WC memory: Holland v West Germany 1990, Frank Rijkaard spat really obviously at Rudi Voller, who retaliated, and both were sent off.
You hardly ever get those outbreaks of 'honest', hate-filled, don't-care-about-the-consequences-for-the-game violence these days, do you? Very rarely do we see punch-ups with everyone piling in. I guess it has a lot to do with the stakes raising: 20 years ago players would retire and buy a pub or something. Today the game is worth so much more. Also, a lot of today's players don't want to disturb their hairdos or ruin their nice tan with an unsightly black eye.

True, but for me the parents who endorse that behaviour are the ultimate villains. What does that teach kids about life? 0.00001% of them are going to make it as professional footballers and utilise those dubious ethics in their career. The rest are going to take the lesson into other walks of life that it's fine to cheat and cut corners to succeed, not bother with that business of effort, ingenuity and obeying the law.

I think the kick happened on the 25th and that article is about the ban and fine United gave him a couple of days later.
