An interesting point that Lofthouse is now the benchmark for getting a statue. My question is, is it possible to do more then him. He was special, not just for Bolton, but in football. Born here, played here during a war and his whole career, legend on international scene, won us cups, was involved with the club in one way or another up until his death. If he is the benchmark, we will never have another statue. I would go as far to sat that if he was the bench mark for all clubs, very few would have statues.
Dont think a statue of Diouf would be at all pleasant no matter how charitable he is....Hate to think what visiting fans would do to it...
I wasn't suggesting we get a statue of Diouf! <laugh.
What I was gunning at was although we may not view most footballers as worthy of a statue, as we are comparing them to famous figures from our national history who have been given that honour, there are those who may feel a footballer is worth of that recognition. I use the example of someone like Diouf who has come from an impoverished background and now gives back to improve things as it is the easiest way to illustrate what I meant.
No statue even of Lofty..We should just rename the stadium after him..That would be the best honour..
It would you're right.
Unfortunately the financial position of the club is such that we can't afford to lose out on the income from the stadium naming rights.
It might be an idea to have a 'Lofty Award' to be given to the player with the worst disciplinary record at the end of a season!
How about renaming De Haviland Way Lofthouse Way? We should keep Burnden Way though..
Dont know but statues just dont cut it for me if its sportspeople and I wouldnt trust the sculpturer to get it right as I mentioned above.....
I like the idea of Lofthouse Way.
No. In all honesty none can hold a candle to Nat.
Although there have been several great players who have ripped their tripe out for us and who have been given hero status by the fans, to erect a statue to a former player has to be reserved for peolpe who have given the best part of their life for the club. There is only one man who has done that for Bolton Wanderers Football Club, his name is Nat Lofthouse, he will remain a hero to eneryone who knew him or knew of him.
Lofthouse statue only.
Unless.....if we do go the Arsenal, (you can have a statue if you passed it nice once), route then the other statues all have to be a lot smaller and they all have to be bowing down to Nat's statue.
It's a really interesting question, this. Arsenal can build statues of anyone they like, I just think that Tony Adams was neither a great player or a great role model. If he's the bench mark, you could make a case for dozens of players.
If Fred Dibnah can warrant a statue ..anybody can!
I can't see why a footballing legend can't have a statue outside a football ground ...and Nat's as worthy of such an accolade as any player who's ever kicked a football, professionally. But I think Nat was a ' one off ' and I can't imagine any other Bolton player ever living up to the tag of LEGEND in this modern era of football.
So I like the idea of a montage of a (select) few ' mini-legends' of the modern era ...though I think if BSA was to be considered, it would have to wait until PG has been shipped off to a nursing home!
Was going to say the same Firstof. Its not like the statue is going in the town centre, its going to be at the stadium, where the only people who will see it on a regular basis are football fans. People get statues for outstanding service in their field, and Nat was just that. He was also an ambassador for the town of Bolton, so you could argue that if it were in the town centre nobody could complain about that either.
