Suarez didn't say that though.

If he had, I'll call him a racist too

Redconn, why dont you call a black man the English translation of it then if you dont wanna speak Spanish?

Did Don get back on the site OK, he triggered one of our duplicate account systems which run periodically and ban duplicate accounts from residential IPs.

Pretty sure the 8 ,match ban and the 40k fine says otherwise Redconn

And his gesgure towards the Fulham fans

Lets not forget the rioting in the European cup final that cost England its place in Europe along with ending 35 lives

Oh..

Any Carroll

there isn't a direct English translation for Por Que Negro that captures the cultural meaning as well.

So I wouldn't try thereby avoiding any confusion

so what does it mean then redconn if you cant translate it? Surely you're not saying there's nothing wrong with saying 'por que negro' when you don't know what it means???

Please let me know your understanding of the phrase you defended

The translation would be something along the lines of 'Why is that then dude' according to the uruguyan bloke who explained it to me.

The translation of the word means 'black'

It's closest to "what's that mate" or "what's that brother" and you'd use it when addressing someone with dark hair and/or dark skin.

If the person had blonde hair, they swap out the negro for a word that means "blondie"

But there is no way to translate that inoffensive phrase into English as we don't have a cultural equivalent as we don't use physical characteristics in common language. It's taboo (and possibly illegal) for an Englishman, in English to do that.

So why did the FA give him a 8 match ban then?

Pretty sure they worked out that the term was a racist one?

Pretty sure the FA deem this word a racist one

If a Spurs player did the same there would be no way I would defend him, regardless

So Suarez is that naive that the word negro could affend a black person even though he's been playing in Europe for a few years?
He might not be rascist but he deserves the ban for being so naive and stupid.

He might not be a racist, but the term he used was racist and as Lobsters has already said, he has lived in Europe for the last 6 years and should know better.

The fans, should know better

Evra's teammates use it with him too And Evra, on youtube of all places.

And Suarez does with his teammates as well. And friends. And family (he's part black remember).

I'm not sure anyone does anymore though, I'd imagine management at the clubs put an end to it now to be on the safe side of the cultural ignorance police

I'm bored of this now.

Enjoy the thread, all yours mates

Do you have black friends?

Do if one black friend says to another 'Hey Negro' you're saying thats fine for a white person to use that?

And don't give me Suarez is half black

Jenas is 'half black'

I really can't be bothered to discuss this with someone who openly defends Suarez's actions

The FA made the right call at the end of the day

posted on 29/1/12

What did Suarez say ? Did he stop the player during the game and say "hey you black ******, you should be cleaning my ******* boots you dirty ******* ******" ? if he said something like that, then that would be racist and he would have deserved any punishment the FA would have given him.

>>Do if one black friend says to another 'Hey Negro' you're saying thats fine for a white person to use that?

no

that would be racist. You said it in English which has a completely different meaning.

I'm using it in the general sense! you're saying that if he hears a fellow footballer use the saying its fine for him to use it?

He must know the history of Liverpool vs United.

Stupidity took over and he got rightly banned

In my opinion, that muppet in the crowd yesterday was far more offensive than what's being descibred above (if i have understood it correctly).

For me there is a difference between something which is genuinly (and deliberatley) upsetting and offensive (like yesterday's liverpool fan), and someone who tells tales because someone's said a bad word.

Not having been there, I dont know which scenario would apply to the suarez incident or the terry incident, but it interesting reading everyone else's views on what is clearly an emotive topic.

All he said was Por Que Negro
================

Actually, that does sound quite racist. My bad.
