Hippo - depends which play it is. You get 4 attempts to move forward 10 yards, if you dont make it the ball is given over. Hence why the Pats kicked the 3 points on their 4th play last time!

Hippo if a team can't advance the ball within 4 chances i.e four downs..then usually on the fourth they choose to kick it away or maybe attempt a field goal
