I wasn't in favour of him as a successor of Carlo - but now he's here - may the force be with him!!

I thought the appointment was a good one and still do

I actually said on a thread on the Chelsea board that it would be asking alot for a young manager like that to get the better of SAF and Harry Redknapp in his first season

His cause has hardly been helped with the form of you record signing either

I actually thought he would take a season or two to get used to the league and questioned whether the manager would be given the time by an owner that sacked one of the best managers there is in Mourinho and also a manager that won the double the previous season

AVB needs to be given time like the young SAF was given at United when he came

I doubt that will happen though.

RA expects far too much and far too quickly

Victim of his own success!!

Because he ruled the rosst at Porto and owned the whole league, add the fact Jose did for us in 04-06, AVB was expected to do the same str8 away, was never going to happen.

Don't think he was Tommy, I think he was bought in with a mandate to oversee the transition from the remnants of Jose's squad!

Pro AVB - but of course we all have doubts, as I'm sure he does too. He wasn't expecting the problems crowding in regarding players' declining powers, being stuck in their ways, winding down contracts, etc.
That's all contributed to sense of confusion.

His inexperience in that regard could cost us 4th place. But we should look to the long haul - as almost everyone on this board recognises.

Still believe it will come good in long run.

I agree they had a plan for AVB to oversee a longer-term transition and the transfers so far under his reign seem to suggest that (mind you he was weird about the De Bruyne signing). RA must still be a bit antsy about our tenuous grip on 4th place. I'm sure he expected even with a transition we would cruise the top 3.

In answer to the OP's initial question, it's because of our all around horrible play and club being outside our recent comfort zone of top 3. Some people need a scape goat.

I think if he is allowed to rid the club of the players who are in control of the dresing room, and make his own signings, he will come good.

I think RA's going to give him time and in a year or two we'll all be chuffed that we snagged a good manager at such a young age.
I see AVB managing chelsea for decades to come.

Brummie

I meant quite a lot of our fans just naturally expected him to do the same

I haven't given up on him.

My exact words are that he is "proving to be tactically inept", which he is. Why would you go gung-ho at 3-0 and take off one of your best attacking threats then at 3-2 when it's too late try and change it?

I don't think AVB is a bad manager, he knows a hell of a lot more about football than you or I but he is inexperienced and naive, but that is to be expected for a man of his age.

The United and Arsenal home games in particular were easily winnable if we had just played our cards right.

Failing to beat Fulham at home is inexcusable and losing to Villa at home is up there with the worst home defeats we've had in the last 5 or 6 years.

If we weren't good enough or didn't have the ability, as with previous Chelsea sides than people like myself, MrChelsea and others you have mentioned couldn't care less but what frustrates me is seeing how well we played in the first half against Arsenal and the majority of the game vs City, United (away) and Spurs, yet the seemingly half @rsed efforts against Wigan , Fulham, Sunderland etc, the only difference between us/United/City IMO is us not reaching our potential. For the first 2 and a half months of the season we were as good as the Manchester clubs but that defeat to Arsenal has ruined us as I thought it would.

When AVB stops playing Bosingwa and Malouda who every man and his dog can see a useless and couldn't care less about the club then maybe I'll begin to have faith in him

His biggest enemy Tommy - the weight of expectation!!

AVB Squats

I disagree, Newcastle are the surprise package but you'd have expected all the others to compete, admittedly it didn't look like Spurs would in August.

OP

I have been wanting to post something similar lately. People are crazy if they think anyone (including mourinho) could come in and do any better with a squad like this.

None of them should be competing for fourth. If we were playing like we should be there'd be about a 10 point gap.
