Shout out to the whistle used by Titanic's First Mate, as used so dramatically in James Cameron's 1997 film staring Kate Winslet to call her rescuers.

The Sunderland player played to the whistle which was correct thing to do,Mertesacker looked like he just tripped over in the first instance, unlucky for Mertesacker injured and gave a goal away not a good day for him,but sure he's happy with the end result.

it wasn't a head injury, so no, he wasn't obliged to stop the game.

yh I'm not having a go at the sunderland player, just wanted to check to rules, would have been so gutting if we had lost coz of that, mert was having a good game too

Mertesacker should have grabbed his head in agony then. Shame for him because he could be out with an inury for a few months.

I am sorry for Sunderland' players. Playing on that pitch twice in a months is terrible. The FA shouldnt allow these pitches. We won so it dosent matter. But players on that level deserves betters.

To be fair, McClean did kick the ball out almost immediately...

Even Wenger said he did not blame the ref or Sunderland......he said "I thought about it during the game after they scored, but you cannot demand that [play to stop] because you do not know if the guy has gone down through injury or because he slipped.
"It's just in the action, you cannot demand to stop."

And Wenger is, as usual, right. RvP didn't give a second thought to kicking the ball out when Terry flopped to the floor so hilariously, and when Phil Jones twisted himself in knots we continued. So to expect another team to kick the ball out in a similar situation is taking the pee a bit.

I bet managers would be singing a diff tune if they lost said games!

As Koscielny PPR said it wasn't a head injury so the game went on as one would expect.
