Sorry mate but he's still one of ours

My personal favourite memory of him was when he was actually crying at Stoke, the big wuss.

Did he cry cause he let a goal in?

When I watch that I start to feel like we don't give Friedel enough credit.

He was shocking, will never forget that superb save though from RVPs free kick in the Arsenal game, super save.

He was an important part of the teaam that got us top 4.
That season he saved us more points than what he cost us.
He needs to move on and im sure he will get his confidence back and be a great keeper again.
Im glad we have a pair of safe hands between the sticks bit im not going to take the micky out on him

Paxton yeah that was a super one, and there was a great save off a deflected Ronaldo freekick I seem to remember. No question he could pull out some fine saves when he wanted to.

I know I will make myself unpopular with this post, but Gomes is a prime example of how very fickle some folk on this forum are.

Since he became out of favour at the club, some of the articles and comments about the guy have been way out of order and have come from the same people who were defending him to the hilt only months earlier when guys who knew what they were talking about, pointed out his obvious weaknesses.

I happen to like Gomes, having said that Brad Friedel has excelled himself this season. So is obviously is our present Number One.

Who knows though it could change once again. Paul Robertson was going to be our goalie for years, but he fell out of favour pretty quick.

I thought at one pint he was about the best shot stopper in the league, unfortunately crosses/decision-making/positioning/concentration etc was where he let himself down ...nice bloke though

Another one of Comolli`s horror signings, cost around 8m and we would be lucky to get 2m for him at the moment.

Comolli decided Robinson needed replacing and was a worse keeper than Gomes

Spurcat, although I won't argue about the fickleness of some fans/posters on this website (I can be fickle too, I know this)....how can you be sure it's 'the same' posters who were defending him who are now ridiculing him?

Isn't that the same as when rival fans say things like 'you were all saying you were going to win the league' - when really it was just a small minority?

My opinion on Gomes still hasn't changed - capable of some truly world glass goalkeeping: I still maintain that he is capable of making better saves than Friedel is able to, however he was far too erratic to be trusted. Brad is the model of consistency and exactly what we need between the sticks.

Erm, because I have read this site and because I remember very well who was defending him day after day on the old BBC 606.

No, it is not the same as the example you have quoted, not at all. Believe me, there were only two people on here and more frequently on the old 606, who pointed out the flaws in this guys game and that was myself and Grandspurs.

This is not an "I told you so" post, but we were absolutely slaughtered by the Gomes fans who now queue up to slag the guy off at every oppotuinty.

You can attempt to make what excuses you what for your colleagues on here, but I know what was said and what is being said now, and I stand by what I posted earlier - there are loads of fickle people on here when it comes to Gomes.

Spurcat I'm happy to take your word for remembering which individuals did or didn't defend Gomes, as I honestly couldn't say either way.

But the statement that it was only ever you and grandspurs who questioned Gomes and everyone slated you for it just isn't true. As already mentioned, my opinion of Gomes has never been different to what I stated above, and I remember several posters questioning if he was up to the grade for us. I don't like to slate any player who pulls on the shirt for us, but don't just blindly defend players either. And I'm not the only one who feels that way.

As I already said, I know many of us can be fickle at times, it often seems to be the nature of being a football fan. And I don't want to get into an argument with you, but it just felt like a bit of a sweeping generalisation.
