Yeah wasn't the most sensible thing to say considering he has struggled in the test arena and making some runs in the shorter format just papers over his technical cracks that he has as an test batsman.
"Having played so long for Ireland and used to losing in the longer format"
Do Ireland play the longer format?
The more interesting aspect of the interview is his belief that he doesn't need to adapt his style. I can't believe he's saying this. His batting in the Test Matches was gutless. He looked nothing like the creative and positive batsman that we had all seen in the odis. If he thinks he didn't adapt his style then he's just an idiot.
Ireland play 4-day games hazsa.
Couldn't agree more hopefor, lets get rid of the man sharpish from our beloved test team. He can hit a very long ball and will always be handy for the shorter formats, so he has plenty of good times ahead as an England international.
His first class performances have never warranted a Test call-up in the first place.
Agreed Marco and yet he seems to be getting to play for us all the time. There must be something about him that Andy Flower and the selectors like, but even though I have tried and tried, I have no idea what it is lol
His performances against Pakistan were beyond belief hopeless?
You could understand it if he was in there as a 'game-changer'... someone who can wrestle the momentum back from the oppo with a quick blitz, but as hazsa points out, he doesn't show anything like the positive intent we so often see in ODI's.
I cannot understand why they believe a player who bobs down into a sitting position, then bobs up to a crouch to play the delivery, has a technique for test cricket.
I can just imagine the sledging he;ll get especially against the Aussies. He looks ridiculas.
Fair one hopeforthebest
Personally I feel he can succeed in Test Cricket, I want to see the outlandish shots that he plays in odis though.
That technique worked well for Lara?
kash I think you were listening to Nasser Hussain the other day when he used the same comparison, but even Hussain admitted Lara was far less extreme in his movment than Morgan.
Not and never have been a fan in the test arena. Yes, great in the one day game.
Get Taylor in!
i can see where you are coming from.... this is the same attitude our youngsters have and it boils my blood when i see our bcci president say that we did well against west indies and england at home and this happens in cricket. fully agree with you. no wonder he isnt excelling in tests
He failed once again today.
Who else then ?
Taylor? An average of 38 and only 1 century last year in Div 2, hardly screams "pick me".
Patel? Like the added bonus of his bowling.
Bairstow?
Serial!
6. Prior
7. Bresnan
8. Broad
9. Swann
10. Anderson
11. Finn / Panesar
I agree there is no stand out number 6 batsman at present. Taylor has played a host of games for the Lions and has failed to catch Andy Flowers eye.
Bopara doesn't impress me in test games but seems certain to return.
We need to find a players with the technique for the longer format but where they are I've no idea.
Bresnan,Broad and Swann at 7,8 and 9 is not too bad at all, but looking to the future we need a body of reserve batsmen as we have reserve bowlers.
Can't Prior bat at six as Marco suggests hopefor? He is a gritty player and could do a good job, especially with the wealth of quality we have coming in after him?
Maksi.
That's what I said, bresnan at 7 which means Prior at 6.
However these batsmen cannot go on for ever and new blood of test quality must be found.
Ed Joyce is playing pretty well at the moment, perhaps we can do a swap deal with Ireland Morgan for Joyce.
lol hopefor, I would not mind that at all
I agree with MILF.
Time was the side was 6 batsmen, inc 1 wk/bat, one genuine all rounder and 4 specialist bowlers.
we don't have a genuine all-rounder in the Botham / Flintoff / Hadlee sense, but I'm pretty sure that Broad, Bresnan & Swann between them make the same batting contribution as one genuine all rounder and 2 specialist bowlers would make.
For Sri Lanka Andy Flower has quite a dilemma concerning bowling. With Prior at 6 and two spinners which 3 seamers do you play? Broad is certain to play , Anderson is seen as the leader of them and Finn is going so well. Yet with Broad at 7 and Swann at 8 then Anderson Finn and Monty the tail looks weak.
With two spinners surely Bresnan must play so is it then Anderson or Finn.
Oh he is so sorrt for just trying to have bit of positivity. Jst give the guy a break.. By joining the England teamand saying that TEST cricket for him is the PINNACLE of the game and the facf that he has always wanted to play test cricket is proof of his loyalty to the form of the game. I for one hope he is representing the England Test team for a long time to come, so please, get off your high horse and understand that players have to say things like that for the media, fans and to show the other team that they aren't being defeatist!!
