The problem doesn't lie with the quality of the opposition involved, it is to do with the mocking of the competition by teams fans who are not normally involved with it. Of course it is a competition that any team wants to win, but when you have derided the competition as a nothing cup then wanting your team to win it is somewhat diminished!
You say that, BillyBob, but whether or not United fans had derided fans of other teams (mainly Liverpool) for being in the Europa Cup, winning the competition would still not mean as much as winning the Premier League or Champions League. That's just the nature of football these days when the top clubs are used to competing in the top competitions season in, season out.
I for one am happy to see United winning any game in any competition.

That is so refreshing to hear.
I agree that if you are in it then you try to win it, and I applaud your support for United in this competition.
It is quite ironic however that United fans are now willing their team to win a competition that they have derided for the last ten years!

Of course they are, but that happens every season in the Carling Cup, for example -- and not just with United fans either.

Of course we will deride the competition when Liverpool are in it and we are in the CL. You think it wouldn't be the same the other way round? But it is still a competition and probably worth more than the FA Cup - just. Not sure why you are going on about what is just normal banter between fans. When we are back in CL again next year and Liverpool are in the Europa the competition will again be rubbish. That's life.
It will be from the same guys that tell us Liverpool's European Cups were easier to win despite only getting into the competition if you were champions and playing only championship winning teams in a knock out!
Craftily forgetting 1999 when they'd finished second in 1998

True.
I actually want United to get to the final, I don't want them to win it but the competition loses its appeal for me when British teams are not involved!
I guess you will be cheering on Cardiff on Sunday? But more than that, I guess you wish you were cheering on United! I say 3 nil to Liverpool, what do you think?

Who is better? The champions of Finland, or the second and third teams from Spain, Italy and Germany?
And who do you play in the preliminaries in Europe now?
I think you'll find it might be the same fodder in the first round or 2
You can't seriously be seeking to justify that nonsense

Yeah of course I understand the banter. You can see the hypocrisy (not sure that is the best word) that is evident though.
Micky Mouse cup etc etc, is banded about too freely imo, it has actually bit United fans in the ass this season. Of course you want to win it, but it doesn't stop people like me reminding United fans of their ridiculing of the competition in the past!
I'm just pointing out that because all of them were champions back then doesn't mean it was a stronger competition. I'd say it's probably about the same. The Dutch, Belgian and Portuguese leagues were better back then. However, allowing non champions in the modern era negates that. Overall I'd say much the same.

The whole 'is it harder to win now' argument is worthy of a whole article on its own. It was a different format and obviously cannot be realistically transferred to today!
I think that in today's format you are likely to face three good teams from the quarters onwards. Back in the day you were more likely to get away with meeting only two if the draw was kind. So perhaps a touch harder in the modern era, but nothing in it really.
BillyBob, re: the Carling Cup final, yeah I'd like to see Cardiff win but I certainly won't be gutted if Liverpool do.
No team has a divine right to trophies but even as a United fan I think Liverpool 'should' be up there winning things.
