Liverpools dominance pre-1991

Back then Liverpool were utterly dominant, there was no money in the game particularly, & no foriegners

There were also a lot of Liverpool players in the home international sides too - but they were utter shat (including England)

go figure...

Scotland and England failed due to bad management.

Alan Hansen was probably the best defender in Europe in the early 80's. He won the European Cup 3 times in a short period yet Slur Red Nose picked his mate big Eck every time over him.

England were no better they played the likes of Steve Bull and Mark Hately.

I was thinking more late 70's really

Look at who Liverpool had then...(England players)

We never even qualified in 78

blame Shilton, he kept out Clemence.

we would have done better with him in goal

That was our only strong position with them two in tandem

better than we have now days lol.

who do we have apart from Hart?

last world cup we had 2 keepers who got relegated that season as choices before Hart! in Greene and James, add to that Gerrard played out of position and you can see why we fail as a country in tournaments as we ether don't have good enough players, or when we do we play them out of position lol.

lets hope harry puts that right soon

Deep space.
Was the irony in the article heading meant to be as patronising as it sounds ?

I only ask because not one of these posters have picked up on it.

Very unlike a Scouser to miss that

"It was certainly harder to win the comp back then than it is now days.

Now days with this league format you can rest your best players after 3 -4 games if you won them, never had that luxury before as was "

what a load of carp, in the old European Cup after 3 or 4 games you were virtually in the final having played teams like Hibernians of Malta or other such European heavyweights.

Are you forgetting, you had to win the league or be the holders of the trophy to be in it. So on that score it was more difficult to get in to the competition & there was still the top sides around from each country & Holland had strong sides as well. Notice you didn't list 1968

of course he didn't he is a bitter old manc.

any thing they do is amazing anything we do is pure luck we should know that by know.

like the way he doesn't think the old format was harder(only league champions enter), but seeding what a brilliant idea to make sure the supposed top clubs never meet until the later stages! old format luck of the draw.

1968 was as bad and I did give it a passing mention when I mentioned Hibernians of Malta, United also played the mighty Gornik Zabrze.
Yes you did have to be champions but that diluted the competition not strengthend it. Barca could never draw Real Madrid like they can now. You were just as likely to draw a team from Belgium, Sweden or Scotland as one from Germany, Italy or Spain. Nowadays there is much much more chance of drawing a top team.
