Trap gets paid an awful lot of money to manage us. His job brief is simple. Put the best team available on the pitch and try and win games. Sounds simple enough.
Now are you saying the Andrews, Whelan, Keogh, McShane, Green, etc are better players than McCarthy, McClean, Houlihan, Pilkington,Coleman, etc….? In my opinion….no. This is what winds Dunphy up.
How can Trap say that he plays to our strengths when he has never played our strongest team? Why do the players mentioned above continue to be part of squads when the majority of fans think they’re not good enough? Why doesn’t Trap give more opportunity to the Colemans, McCleans, etc….because he wants to be loyal to the players? What rubbish. His job is to pick the best available team not be loyal.
We play a style of football that’s hard to watch. It’s boring, sometimes long ball, no passing, no movement, etc. Trap says that’s because we don’t have the players. I say its because we have the players but Trap doesn’t want to use them.
Did Trap get us qualified for Euro 2012? No, the players did. No thanks to his tactics.
Wild rover, id like to think I could have put it better, but I can't, well said on all points.

So essentially we don't need a manager then. We obviously have the players that can qualify our wee nation regardless of tactics. Save ourself some money, fire Trap and bring back Staunton, we are going to qualify anyway lads. Do you know why McClean is now in consideration? Because Martin ONeill took over at Sunderland and turned them into a team. The exact same set of players that Steve Bruce had. So managers influence teams and get them qualified for tournaments.

How do you know this? Have you seen them all train together? Keogh and McShane were not in last nights squad and Green made his first appearance in 18 months. McClean only gets mentioned cause he is on a wee hot spell. I think the most on form player we have is Andrews who has scored 6 goals in 7 games in the time McClean has had a top flight career. Whelan plays regular football for a team guaranteed at least mid table and had a decent run in Europe. McCarthy plays for a relegation threatened team.

He does get paid a lot of money and I bet he beleives he is fielding the best possible team for Ireland to get us qualified. Do you think he is sitting talking with his other coaches "McCarthy is a great player and would improve the team, but I am not going to play him." So it comes down to my opinion, your opinion and Traps opinion. The man has won it all as a manager, so I will defer to him cause he probably knows more about it than me and he did qualify my nation for a major championship, which is what he gets paid all that money for.

Yes lets just pick all the best players like Kerr did because it worked out so well last time. Trapp can be infurating but has got us to the finals and within a whicker of qualifying for the last wc. He is one of the all time great managers but maybe you know better

My argument is that this defensive, soak up pressure style of football that Trap plays is fine in qualifying situations where clean sheets and getting points on the board are vital. What worries me is if we go one or two down to the likes of Spain or have to win our final group game, what tactics will he employ, what players will he turn to? Would you have confidence in Whelan, Andrews unlocking the World and European Champions defence with a killer ball or bit of magic? Didn’t think so. We have never played an attacking football in any games (including friendlies) or given enough time on the pitch to our creative midfielders to see what they can do. Setting up a team to not get beaten is one thing but does Trap have a plan B? I don’t think so.
What does he do when we are under pressure in Moscow? Absolutely nothing.
What did he do when we were 4-0 against Estonia? Absolutely nothing.
It’s the same tactics for every game, every opponent, regardless of the situation. This is what worries me.
P.S Just because a manger has a great CV doesn’t mean he’s not open criticism. As an Arsenal fan surely you are aware of this.

The second leg against France he caught them out by getting the team to play attacking football that alone proves you wrong. I trust his judgement. I agree that he should be open to criticism and should we do badly in the euros he will be slated but something tells me we can shock a few teams!
Considering we'll only play three games, shocking a 'few' teams is eh..doubtful.
Getting back to the OP .I think much of Dunphys critisisms, at this point, are motivated by making money. But,,,we could do, and could have done with a lot more of bringing down of sacred cows in every aspect of Irish society.Up De Hoops.
Btw theresonlyone reds, there is, n it's the Hoops' challengers, Shelbourne F.C.
