To be fair though football now a days just doesn't allow for that many goals to be scored by one individual especially in England.

That`s not true, the strikers should be scoring many, many more, it is just that most of them cannot hit the target from three yards. The amount of sitters that are missed is going up year on year. Sure the game is quicker. But one on one with the goalies, Greaves jad pretty well a 100 per cent record.

Just because it is a stat you do not happen to like hardly makes it boring. I thought you lot liked stats, you are always on about Walcott and Stats.

Sandy, how many games had each player played at this stage in their career?
This isn't laying the ground for excuse-making, I'm genuinely interested.
Am I right in thinking that back in Greaves' day you were allowed only one sub?
That would surely indicate less of a squad based strategy by clubs, with much more reliance placed on a first XI.
And it also shouldn't be forgotten that Van Persie was a winger at Feyenoord and though he signed for Arsenal at the age of 20, he was utilised there for the first few years until Bergkamp retired.
Lexington,

So Wenger turned RVP from a winger into a forward, but chose to turn Walcott from a prolific forward to a below average winger?
And yes, i'm fully aware this "below average winger" i'm referring to scored 2 against Spurs.
Wenger's weird like that.
We're used to it now, Chicken.
Arsenal are also used to winning fack all

In answer to your question.
Greaves had played approximately 490 games. Breaking down thus
13 seasons
11 seasons scoring over 20 league goals
9 seasons scoring over 30 goals in all comps (phenomenal in any era)
RVP has played approximately 341 matches, so whilst obviously playing less he has only ever scored over 20 goals in the one season, which is this season.
There were no subs allowed for most of Jimmy Greaves career, but that should not really come into the argument. Even allowing for players playing in every games these days, they would come nowhere near what Jimmy Greaves achieved over his 13/14 year career.

Wow, that is phenomenal.
So, would you say that Greaves is Tottenham's greatest ever striker?
Lexington,
It still puzzles me to this day why Wenger persists with playing Walcott out of position. Its not like he's just as good at one as he is the other is it? he's a forward, no doubt about it.
I dread to think how many goals he would be on by now had Wenger played him up top.

Not only was he Tottenham`s greatest ever striker, he was the greatest British striker ever. That`s not to belittle the many fine strikers I have seen over 50 years, it was just that Jimmy stood out head and shoulders over them all, he was that good.

Though it's a little unfair to compare RVP to him then.

It's up to Walcott to show Wenger that he has what it takes to play up front as a striker. I guess he's just not done that enough in training or matches to justify his wish.
As every new season comes and goes, I'm not sure how long he's got left to prove himself at Arsenal.
Lexington.................................Greaves was up there with the Maradona's, Pele & Messi in terms of class & quality.
Just breaking down his Spurs career, in 321 games for Spurs he scored 220 goals, no 20 game droughts for this guy, averaging a goal every 1.5 games is World Class.
His record for Chelsea was even more prolific, 157 games and 124 goals.
Even his short stint at AC Milan returned 9 goals in 12 games!
As Arthur correctly said he was the greatest British striker ever and in my opinion at his peak possibly in the top 5 strikers ever in the World!
Ooooooooooooooops! Nearly forgot his England tally, 44 goals in 57 games.
Even though it was before my time, it genuinely saddened me when I found out how he'd missed out in '66.
My Grandad was a Spurs supporter. He reckoned Greaves never really got over not being part of the final.
I'm not argue about you over how good Greaves was because unlike you I am not in my 70s and have not seen him play.
..and there I was... trying to build bridges...
